Lyon's Groupama Stadium

Where to stay near Groupama Stadium: the 3 areas to know in 2026

The Groupama Stadium is not in Lyon: it rises in Décines-Charpieu, a town of 24,674 people, in the middle of a district that did not exist before it. One of our members sums up what you find there: shops, activities, dining spots, "almost like a small city". Its 59,186 seats make it the third largest ground in France, and the esplanade is enough to fill the evening.

Hence a question city-centre stadiums never ask: should you sleep in this new district, one minute's walk from the gates, or in the historic city, 12.5 kilometres from Part-Dieu station and 20.5 from place Bellecour by road? The tram settles part of the debate: our members find the route from the stop new, well built and clearly signposted.

The kilometres below are those of the road, stadium gates included. The tram, for its part, ignores the traffic: it is through it that the three areas communicate.

The esplanade and the neighbouring towns At the foot of the gates, tram T7 or T3

Anyone wanting everything without leaving the stadium district

The district was built with the ground: an esplanade, shops, restaurants, a concert hall next door, and three hotels within immediate reach, one of them a minute's walk from the gates. The other two are in Meyzieu, a town of 28,929 people, 2.4 kilometres from its town hall. You sleep here to have no journey at all on match night and to enjoy the esplanade beforehand, knowing that the historic city will ask for the tram and for time.

The peninsula, between Saône and Rhône 20.5 kilometres by road, metro then tram

Anyone here for Lyon who adds a match

Between the two rivers, the peninsula gathers the reasons for coming to Lyon: place Bellecour, the slopes, and Old Lyon on the opposite bank of the Saône. The ground is 20.5 kilometres away by road, but the metro and then the tram make the trip without a car. The two addresses of this area have location scores rarely reached in the city, and more modest overall scores: here you pay for the position, and our records say so plainly.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The ticket that combines the museum and the ground: On our pages, a member who took the tour outside a match says it frankly: seeing the museum alone is a little flat once you have known the atmosphere, and it is better to take the ticket that combines the museum and the ground. What she kept from it: the changing rooms, the president's seat, the edge of the pitch, and screens of 88 square metres. The museum opens at weekends and all week during school holidays, which makes it a possible outing on a day without a match.
  • From outside, a shopping centre; inside, a stadium: Our members are divided on the architecture, and both views deserve reading. One was blown away by how ultra-modern it is, by the organisation and by the visibility from any seat; another finds that from outside the ground looks big but a little like a shopping centre, before adding that inside the stands form an ellipse closely framing the pitch and that the roof plays its part as a sounding box. If you come for the shell, you may be disappointed; if you come for the sound, you will not be.
  • The tram is the right answer, and the bike exists: The ground is reached by tram T7 at the Décines OL Vallée stop or by the T3 at Décines Grand Large, and shuttles run on event days. One of our members points out that the route from the stop is new, well built and clearly signposted: impossible to get lost. Cars have reserved spaces, but bikes have better: free parking under the stadium ramps. For an arrival from Part-Dieu, the tram covers 12.5 kilometres without worrying about traffic.
Where not to stay near Groupama Stadium
  • Booking on the esplanade while hoping to visit Lyon on foot: place Bellecour is 20.5 kilometres away by road.
  • Coming by car on an event night: parking is reserved, and the tram serves the gates.
  • Choosing the peninsula while counting on the overall scores: it is the locations that are excellent there, not the whole.

FAQ: where to stay near Groupama Stadium

Sleeping at the Groupama Stadium or in Lyon: which to choose?
Near the ground if the match and its district are enough: one address is a minute's walk from the gates, the esplanade has its shops and restaurants, and the two Meyzieu hotels offer suburban rates. In Lyon if the city counts as much: Part-Dieu station stands 12.5 kilometres from the ground and place Bellecour 20.5 by road, but the tram and the metro make the trip without a car.
How do you reach the Groupama Stadium by public transport?
By tram T7, Décines OL Vallée stop, or by the T3, Décines Grand Large stop, and by shuttles on event days. One of our members notes that the route from the stop is new, well built and clearly signposted. Cars have reserved parking, and bikes a free park under the stadium ramps.
Does the stadium open its doors outside matches?
Yes, with the club museum, open at weekends and all week during school holidays. One of our members recommends the ticket that combines the museum and the ground, which is fuller, and warns that the tour alone is a little flat after seeing a match. From that route she keeps the changing rooms, the president's seat, the edge of the pitch and screens of 88 square metres.
What is the capacity of the Groupama Stadium?
59,186 seats, which makes it the third largest ground in France. Entirely private, designed by the Populous practice and inaugurated in 2016, it received contrasting judgements from our members on its outward look, but the same praise inside: stands that closely frame the pitch and a roof that works as a sounding box.
What is there to do nearby on a day without a fixture?
The esplanade itself, with its shops, its activities and its restaurants, which our members describe as almost a small city. Beyond that you need the tram: 14.9 kilometres to the city's great urban park, 20.5 to place Bellecour, as much to Old Lyon. Our guide to where to stay in Lyon reviews the neighbourhoods; this one stays with the ground.
How do you arrive by train or by plane?
Lyon Part-Dieu station is 12.5 kilometres from the ground and Lyon-Saint-Exupéry airport 14.1. From the station the tram leaves towards the east and serves the gates; from the airport you first have to reach the city. On an event night the car adds nothing anyway, since parking is reserved.
