Visiting the Pù Luông Nature Reserve
Located in the province of Thanh Hoa, about 160 kilometers southwest of Hanoi, the Pù Luông Nature Reserve is a peaceful haven, perfect for lovers of nature and authenticity. With its limestone mountains, terraced rice fields, and traditional villages, the region offers a glimpse of rural Vietnam far from the usual tourist trails.
Spectacular landscapes to explore
Pù Luông is renowned for its terraced rice fields that stretch as far as the eye can see, particularly impressive during the planting seasons (May-June) and harvest seasons (September-October). The wooded hills and karst mountains surrounding the valley form an ideal setting for hiking. Well-marked trails allow visitors to discover the natural diversity of the reserve, notably hidden waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints.
Meeting ethnic minorities
The reserve is home to several villages inhabited by ethnic communities, the White Thai and Muong. These villages, such as Ban Don and Ban Hieu, offer an immersive experience into daily local life. The residents, often warm and welcoming, readily share their traditions, whether it is weaving or preparing traditional dishes. Staying in a stilt house is an excellent way to experience their way of life.
Activities and eco-tourism
Pù Luông offers various activities, such as bicycle rides, visits to traditional watermills, or bamboo rafting excursions on the Cham River. Eco-tourism is encouraged here, with several environmentally friendly accommodations offering sweeping views of the landscapes.
A bit like in Mai Chau, homestay tourism is pretty popular in Pu Luong. The hikes are more demanding and steep. You will walk through the rice paddies, discovering the work of the local farmers. There are some lovely viewpoints over the terraced rice fields. The ideal season is before the rice harvest, when everything is nice and green. In the evening, you will probably learn how to cook spring rolls with your hosts.
