Visiting Mai Khao Beach
Anyone who has spent time researching white sand beaches, island getaways, or Thailand likely knows Phuket. It is the largest island in the country, located about 560 miles from Bangkok on the western side of the Malay Peninsula. The island features lush tropical terrain and some of the most recognizable shorelines in the world.
Mai Khao Beach is located on the northwestern section of the island and is largely bordered by the Sirinath National Park. This protection allows it to maintain a rugged, natural landscape rather than being overtaken by resort developments. This expansive beach stretches for 6 miles north from the Phuket International Airport.
Despite its visual appeal, Mai Khao Beach sees fewer crowds than other spots for several practical reasons. The sand texture is coarser than what you find at typical vacation hubs, which often deters sunbathers. Furthermore, the limited number of hotels in the immediate vicinity keeps visitor numbers low. Add to that the fact that there are no lifeguards on duty and the seafloor drops off very abruptly, and it becomes clear why this is not the safest spot for a casual swim. You will encounter more nature enthusiasts walking the shoreline here than tourists looking for a beach lounge chair. However, there are still compelling reasons to visit Mai Khao Beach.
The sea turtle release
There is one annual event that draws a crowd to this stretch of coast, which is the nesting period of leatherback sea turtles. These ancient creatures come ashore once a year to lay their eggs in the sand. Unfortunately, sightings have become increasingly rare in recent years. To help the population, conservationists organize official ceremonies to release hatchlings into the ocean.
Another activity that draws visitors is watching the aircraft. Planes landing at the nearby airport make their final approach directly over the beach, sometimes passing just 65 feet above the sand, which makes for a striking spectacle.
A beach for nature lovers.
Due to its popularity as a tourist destination, many beaches in Phuket have started to feel like vacation factories.
That is not the case for Mai Khao yet. It actually seems to me that the area is located in a protected zone.
You will be able to enjoy its white sand in peace, if you are staying in the area :)
