Where to stay near Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium: the 3 areas to know in 2026
Our member came to the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard when AS Saint-Étienne was still in the second division, and that is where this page starts: the stands were “almost full for a second division match”, and “you can really feel the passion and the true football tradition there”. The ground's nickname, the Cauldron, is not a brochure invention.
The accommodation problem follows from that. The 41,965 seats fill up in a town of 176,280 inhabitants, so the demand on a match night goes beyond what the stadium district can offer. Three areas, moving outwards: La Terrasse and the north, at the foot of the stands; from Châteaucreux station to the centre, 3 to 4.3 kilometres; and Lyon, an hour away by regional train, when nothing is left here.

The two ways to stay near Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium
What settles it here is availability rather than comfort: the ground fills up, the town is mid-sized, and the room is hunted further and further out.
| What changes | North, near the ground | In town or in Lyon |
|---|---|---|
| Once the match is over | A few minutes by car | A tram, or the last train |
| The car | Parked at the hotel, often at no extra cost | A station car park, or no car at all |
| Dinner | At the hotel restaurant | The tables around the Place du Peuple |
| Arriving by train | Fifteen minutes of tram on top | The platforms under the windows |
| The next day | The Zénith and the exhibition park | The Cité du design, or the whole of Lyon |
| The number of reviews | From six hundred and seventy to sixteen hundred | From three hundred and fifty to a thousand |
| Finding a room when it is full | Three addresses, and that is all | The town, then the neighbouring metropolis |
| Who it suits | Anyone coming for the Cauldron | Anyone adding a city to the match |
How long to the entrance, area by area?
The distances given go by road. The T3 tram serves the stands through a stop that carries the name of the ground and that of its museum.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| La Terrasse and the north, at the foot of the stands | 2.6 km | car or tram The furthest of the three addresses sits at that distance. |
| From Châteaucreux station to the centre | 3 km | T3 tram Fifteen minutes from the platforms, with no change. |
| Lyon, an hour away by regional train | 63.4 km | regional train then tram Forty-nine minutes of train on average, nineteen times a day. |

La Terrasse and the north, at the foot of the stands Between the ground, the Zénith hall and the exhibition park
For anyone arriving by car who wants the stands close by
The ground occupies the north of the town, with the exhibition park 1.7 kilometres away and the Zénith concert hall 2.4: an events district rather than a place to live, where the hotels work for trade fairs as much as for matches. Two of the three do not charge for parking, which counts here more than elsewhere, and the T3 tram stops at Geoffroy Guichard - Musée des Verts. On the other hand, to dine anywhere but at the hotel you will have to go back down.
You can really feel the passion and the true football tradition there.

Pros

Cons
- An events district, not a place to live
- To eat out, you have to go back down
From Châteaucreux station to the centre 3 to 4.3 kilometres, between the platforms and the Place du Peuple
For anyone off the high-speed train who means to dine in town
Three kilometres separate the platforms from the stands, and the T3 tram swallows the distance in fifteen minutes with no change: this is for anyone coming down from Paris or from Lyon. The centre starts just after, Place du Peuple 3.4 kilometres from the stands and Place Jean-Jaurès 4.3, with the tables and the bars the north lacks. In the other direction, the Cité du design stands 2.3 kilometres away, and modern and contemporary art 4.9.

Pros
- Fifteen minutes of tram to the stands
- The tables and the bars of the centre
- The Cité du design, and twentieth-century art
Cons
- Three kilometres at least from the ground
- The tram to get there, and to come back
Lyon, an hour away by regional train 63.4 kilometres away, at the far end of the Châteaucreux line
For anyone coming from far off, or finding no room left
When a ground of 41,965 seats fills up in a town of 176,280 inhabitants, the room can run short: Lyon and its 522,969 inhabitants are then the answer, 49 minutes away by train on average, with nineteen trains a day. The airport, 78.6 kilometres from the ground, is on that side too. The trade-off is the way back: it is worked out on the last train's timetable, not on the wish to stretch the evening.

Our tips for booking the right place
- The ground filled up in the second division, and that is your constraint: Our member went when the club was still in Ligue 2: “the atmosphere was top notch”, the seats “almost full for a second division match”. In other words, the division will not tell you whether the town will be full. With 41,965 seats for 176,280 inhabitants, a match night puts the three hotels of the north, those of the station and those of the centre in competition. The practical consequence is simple: if you have the ticket, take the room the same day.
- The museum is visited when the ground is not playing: The Musée des Verts has occupied 800 square metres inside a stand since 20 December 2013, and presents itself as the first museum in France devoted to a football club. The guided tour of the ground lasts an hour and goes through the press room, the mixed zone, the first team dressing rooms, the players' tunnel and the edge of the pitch, on days without a match. If that is the reason for the trip, the choice of quarter loses its urgency: fifteen minutes of tram link the three areas of Saint-Étienne.
- The tram carries the name of the ground, and its useful end is the station: The stop is called Geoffroy Guichard - Musée des Verts, brought into service on 16 November 2019 with the extension of line T3, and it takes fifteen minutes from Châteaucreux station. That is what makes the station convenient on a match night: you arrive by high-speed train, you step onto the tram, and no car has to be parked. In the north, by contrast, the hotel car park is the argument, and two of the three addresses do not charge for it.
- Waiting until the day before to book on a match night: four inhabitants of the town for one seat in the stands leaves no margin.
- Choosing the north while counting on going out in the evening: the tables are in the centre, 3.4 kilometres away at least.
- Sleeping in Lyon without checking the return timetable: 63.4 kilometres separate the two cities.
