Piau Engaly

Where to stay near Piau Engaly: the 3 areas to know in 2026

Piau-Engaly closes the Aure valley at 1,850 metres, and presents itself as the highest resort in the French Pyrenees. That altitude is its whole argument: it gives the resort one of the best natural snow records in the range, to the point that for the winter of 2025-2026 it was named the French resort that had received the most snow, with 3.50 metres measured at the summit in February.

But the valley does not stop at the resort. A tunnel 3 kilometres long, open all year, comes out on the other side of the border, in a Spanish valley listed as world heritage. Here, where to sleep is therefore not only a choice between the foot of the pistes and the bottom of the valley: there is a third answer, and it is in Aragon.

Piau-Engaly, at the foot of the pistes At 1,850 metres, at the end of the road

Anyone who wants the surest snow and the least driving

The resort is a single compact set of buildings at the back of the cirque, where the flats open straight onto the start of the pistes: location scores there are excellent, and that is what comes through most in the comments. The ski area climbs to 2,528 metres, which on this side of the Pyrenees makes all the difference in December as in April. The drawback is known: functional residences rather than hotels, and nothing around the resort once the lifts stop.

2

The Aure valley: Aragnouet, then Saint-Lary-Soulan From 5.3 to 20.3 kilometres going down

Anyone who wants lived-in villages, real hotels and a second ski area

Going back down the road, you first reach Aragnouet and its hamlets, 5.3 kilometres away, then the valley opens up to Saint-Lary-Soulan, a mountain town 20.3 kilometres down with its shops, its baths and a ski area of its own. That is where the best scored hotels of the area are, and the only village life within reach. The price of that comfort is a mountain road to climb every morning, and the snow at the bottom of the valley bears no comparison with the snow up top.

On the other side of the tunnel: Bielsa and the Pineta valley 35.3 kilometres away, in Aragon

Anyone who wants another language, another kitchen and a national park

The Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, about 3 kilometres long, runs 365 days a year: the border is therefore not a wall but a passage. On the other side opens the Pineta valley, a U shaped glacial valley closed off by three summits above 3,000 metres, which belongs to the Ordesa and Monte Perdido national park, listed as world heritage in 1997. You sleep there for less, you eat differently, and you drive back up to ski in France through the same tunnel. It is the least obvious answer on this page, and the most interesting outside the ski season.

Parador de Bielsa Luxury

Set at the far end of the Pineta valley, facing the walls: a rare location score, and comments that talk about the waterfalls seen from the room.

Pros

  • A listed national park, on the other side

  • A tunnel open all year round

Cons

  • Two tunnel crossings per day of skiing
  • Lorries above 3.5 tonnes are banned from it at night

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The altitude is the product, and it is paid for in isolation: At 1,850 metres, Piau-Engaly offers what most Pyrenean resorts cannot guarantee: snow, early and late in the season, to the point of being named, for the winter of 2025-2026, the one that had received the most snow in France, with 3.50 metres measured at the summit in February. The counterpart is how alone the place stands: the bottom of the valley is 20.3 kilometres away, and the resort offers little besides itself in the evening. Excellent, then, for a week of skiing, poor for a stay that wants anything else.
  • The tunnel redraws the map of where to sleep: Many travellers look for a bed without seeing that the road carries on: the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, about 3 kilometres long, runs 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. That puts Bielsa and the Pineta valley 35.3 kilometres from the resort, with Spanish rates and a national park listed as world heritage instead of the French valley floor. The only known restriction: vehicles above 3.5 tonnes do not pass between 10 at night and 6 in the morning, which does not concern a car.
  • Check the whole spend before comparing nights: A lift pass costs $51* a day for an adult in high season, and over a week that item often weighs as much as the accommodation. In other words, the price gap between a residence at the foot of the pistes and a valley hotel closes quickly if the daily drive eats into your time and your fuel. Do the full sum before picking your zone, rather than comparing two nightly rates.
Where not to stay near Piau Engaly
  • Booking in the valley while expecting to ski at the same hour as those up top: the mountain road runs 20.3 kilometres from Saint-Lary-Soulan.
  • Choosing Piau-Engaly for the evenings: the resort is a compact set of buildings at the back of a cirque, and beyond it the bare mountain begins.
  • Aiming for Gavarnie from the resort on the strength of the map: it stands 14.9 kilometres away as the crow flies, and yet 112.2 kilometres of road separate the two.

FAQ: where to stay near Piau Engaly

Why this resort rather than another in the Pyrenees?
For the snow. Piau-Engaly sits at 1,850 metres and its ski area climbs to 2,528, which gives it one of the best natural snow records in the range; for the winter of 2025-2026 it was named the French resort that had received the most snow, with 3.50 metres at the summit measured in February. The 2026-2027 season runs from 4 December to 4 April.
Can you sleep in Spain and ski in France?
Yes, and that is the particularity of this place. The Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel, about 3 kilometres long, runs 365 days a year and 24 hours a day, barring force majeure. Bielsa lies 35.3 kilometres from the resort through that passage, in the Pineta valley, which belongs to the Ordesa and Monte Perdido national park, listed as world heritage in 1997.
What is Saint-Lary-Soulan worth as a base?
It is the only real town in the area, 20.3 kilometres away: shops, baths, and a ski area of its own. Its hotels score clearly higher than the residences up top, and the rates are those of a valley. In exchange, you have to climb the road every morning, and the snow on the valley floor does not look like the snow at 1,850 metres.
How much does a day of skiing cost?
A lift pass costs $51* a day for an adult in high season. Over a week, that item weighs as much as part of the accommodation: better add it to the nightly rates before choosing between the foot of the pistes and the valley.
What is there to do here apart from skiing?
On the French side, Saint-Lary-Soulan has its baths and its villages. On the Spanish side, the Pineta valley is a U shaped glacial valley closed off by three summits above 3,000 metres, and it belongs to a listed national park. Beware of deceptive distances, though: Gavarnie stands 14.9 kilometres away as the crow flies, and yet 112.2 kilometres of road separate the two.
How do you get here?
Through the Aure valley, by car: the nearest train stops at Lannemezan, 59.7 kilometres away, and Arreau, the crossroads of the valley, is 31.7 kilometres away. The road ends at the resort, then sets off again for Spain through the tunnel. In winter, mountain equipment remains the rule for the last kilometres.
