Visiting Fort Lovrijenac, the sentinel of Dubrovnik
A legendary defensive bastion
Fort Lovrijenac, nicknamed the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik, is a stop for any traveler interested in history and sweeping views. Perched on a 37-meter-high cliff just outside the city walls of Dubrovnik, it played a vital role in local defense. Constructed in the 11th century to shield Dubrovnik from Venetian invasions, this fortress remains a testament to the strategic ingenuity of that era.
Unobstructed views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic
The perspective from the fort is distinct. You look down over the Old Town and its ramparts, set against the backdrop of the clear Adriatic Sea. This position allows you to see Dubrovnik from a different angle while taking in the rugged beauty of the surrounding coastline. The fort is a popular spot for photographers, especially at sunset, when warm light washes over the city.
A site steeped in history and culture
Fort Lovrijenac is more than its military history. Today, it regularly hosts cultural events, including outdoor theater performances, featuring Shakespearean plays in a dramatic setting. It also served as a filming location for the series Game of Thrones, standing in for the Red Keep in King's Landing. Informative displays guide you through its various levels, allowing you to learn more about its history.

*Information subject to change
Located outside the old town walls on a rocky promontory, west of the Pile Gate, this defensive fortress enjoys a prime location for monitoring the coast off Dubrovnik and seeing the old town from the sea. Aside from a few cannons (original?) left on-site, there is not much to see inside the building itself. You can finish the visit in less than an hour.
