What to know about São Bento Beach
Located just a few miles from the center of Maragogi, São Bento Beach serves as a quieter alternative to the more heavily trafficked tourist spots in the region. With its light sand, warm water, and authentic vibe, it appeals to those seeking a low-key setting far from the bustle of large hotel complexes.
A fishing village and a preserved shoreline
São Bento is, first and foremost, a fishing village where you will still see jangadas, the traditional wooden boats used for local fishing. The beach is lined with coconut palms and modest homes, giving the area a relaxed, local atmosphere. Unlike the central beaches of Maragogi, you will find few restaurants or rows of lounge chairs here. People come primarily to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Swimming and natural pools
The waters at São Bento are clear and shallow, making them perfect for swimming. At low tide, natural pools emerge, similar to those found in Maragogi but with significantly fewer crowds. The coral reefs are home to a diverse array of marine life, and you can spot tropical fish just by using a mask and snorkel.
Local specialties and crafts
The village is known for its bolachas gigantes, artisanal cookies baked in traditional ovens. Several small shops sell them, often alongside other local goods like cachaça or coconut jam. A walk through the village is the best way to chat with locals and see a different side of the Alagoas coastline.
