Cénote Yokdzonot

Yokdzonot, the aquatic sanctuary of the Maya community

Less than thirty minutes from Chichén Itzá, one cenote still avoids the crowded tourist circuits. Yokdzonot Cenote, whose Maya name translates to "on top of the cenote," plunges its crystal-clear waters twenty-two meters below the surface. Ancestral roots and vines trace the limestone walls down to the turquoise water, creating a scene where time seems to stand still.

Why Yokdzonot Cenote is worth the visit

In 2005, a group of Maya women from the village of Piste formed the Zaas Koolen Haá (clean water in Maya) cooperative. For two years, after their daily work, they cleared and developed this natural site. Of the fifty original members, only twelve women and five men stayed until the end of this massive project. Their persistence transformed this natural sinkhole into an ecotourism destination where all revenue directly benefits the local community.

This community management makes all the difference. Unlike heavily commercialized cenotes, Yokdzonot offers an authentic and serene experience, with impeccably maintained facilities and a welcoming staff. You are not supporting a corporation, but contributing to the economy of a Maya village.

A spectacular natural sinkhole

The cenote forms a perfect circle forty meters in diameter, with vertical walls plunging twenty-two meters to the water surface. Divers have never found the bottom at the edges. They have reached thirty-five meters of depth without hitting the floor. This vertical immensity, framed by tropical vegetation and hanging roots, creates a unique, mystical atmosphere.

Hundreds of birds nest in the limestone walls and provide a continuous aerial ballet accompanied by their songs. The water, a translucent emerald green, allows you to watch catfish swimming peacefully. Light filters through the overhead opening, casting moving shadows on the rocky walls.

Swimming and adventuring in the cenote

Swimming in sacred waters

Access to the basin is via a wood and stone staircase carved into the rock. Some steps are steep and slippery when wet, but the structure remains solid and secure. Wearing a life jacket is mandatory for all swimmers, a rule that ensures safety in this basin that reaches forty-five meters deep.

Before entering the water, you must take a mandatory shower to remove body oils and sunscreen that could damage the fragile ecosystem of the cenote. This simple step protects aquatic life and maintains the exceptional clarity of the water.

Ziplining and rappelling for adventurers

A seventy-meter zipline lets you fly over the cenote at thirty meters high, offering a dizzying perspective of this natural pit. For thrill-seekers, an eighteen-meter rappel descent along the walls takes you directly into the water. These activities can be booked on-site for an additional fee.

Pro tip: Arrive in the morning at the 9 a.m. opening to enjoy the cenote in absolute tranquility. Tourist groups generally arrive in the early afternoon after their visit to Chichén Itzá, and you might have the privilege of being alone in this natural sanctuary.

Facilities and services on-site

The site has clean and well-maintained changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. The panoramic restaurant offers authentic Yucatecan cuisine prepared with local ingredients. The panuchos and guacamole are especially well-regarded. Hammocks under the palapas invite you to nap after swimming. For adventurers, a camping service allows for an overnight stay by the cenote, a magical experience under the stars.

The parking lot has about ten spots. Be wary of unofficial individuals who might try to charge you an excessive parking fee at the entrance. Always confirm prices with the cooperative staff.
