Hirayu Waterfall: The Frozen Cascade of the Japanese Alps

A sixty-four meter freefall. Water from the Otakigawa River slams into the rocks with a low roar that echoes throughout the valley. In February, this liquid curtain freezes into a column of blue-tinted ice, lit at night by green and blue floodlights. Hirayu Waterfall offers two radically different spectacles depending on the season.

Why visit Hirayu Waterfall?

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment (Kankyo-sho) named this waterfall one of the 100 best in the country in 1990. With a height of 64 meters and a width of 6 meters, it is also one of the three major waterfalls in the Hida region. Its accessibility sets it apart from remote mountain falls, as it takes just a 30-minute easy walk to reach it from the hot spring village of Hirayu Onsen.

A local legend says that 450 years ago, exhausted soldiers followed a white monkey behind the waterfall. The animal led them to a hot spring where they recovered their strength. This is how Hirayu Onsen was allegedly discovered.

Four seasons, four faces

Autumn remains the most popular time for photography. By mid-October, the maples and beeches framing the waterfall turn shades of red, orange, and gold. The contrast with the white water makes for striking compositions. For the best photos, arrive before 10:30 am. After that, the sun moves behind the waterfall and creates glare for visitors.

Winter transforms the site completely. Starting in December, the frost sets in. By February, the waterfall turns into a massive ice stalactite, sometimes tinted blue by light trapped within the frozen mass. The Hirayu Otaki Keppyo Matsuri festival illuminates this setting every year from February 15 to 25, from 7 pm to 9 pm. Fireworks are launched daily during this period.

Pro tip: During the winter festival, a free shuttle connects the Hirayu bus terminal to the site parking lot. The last return bus is at 9:15 pm. Pack very warm clothing, as temperatures often drop below -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit).

The trail and its conditions

The path leading to the waterfall is about 1.4 km round-trip with a modest elevation gain of 88 meters. The terrain presents no technical difficulty. A wooden observation deck provides an unobstructed view of the falls. You cannot get closer than this, as ropes mark a safety zone due to the risk of falling rocks.

The park that once bordered the waterfall closed in November 2016. The shuttle that used to drop visitors off at the foot of the site no longer runs. Today, you must either walk from the village or drive to the parking lot located a few hundred meters from the viewpoint. In winter and early spring, snow may block access to the closest observation point.

Extend the experience at the hot springs

The village of Hirayu Onsen has many thermal establishments. After a walk in the winter cold or summer heat, a soak in the sulfurous waters is essential. The Hirayunomori facility, located right near the start of the trail, offers indoor and outdoor baths for day visitors. Several traditional ryokan inns allow you to spend the night on-site.

Opening hours

Open 24 hours a day. Winter festival: for about ten days in February, illuminations from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

A beautiful waterfall

A magnificent waterfall in every season and truly dizzying. Up close, you can really feel all its power! You can get there by bus from the Takayama station.

On the other hand, it is a tourist spot, so there will be crowds! I also recommend visiting the little village nearby. You can try the onsens or stay in a traditional ryokan.

A stunning mountain waterfall

A chance to discover the beautiful Japanese mountains. But watch out for bears... it is very stressful even though these places are magnificent.
You can enjoy hot springs right nearby. The waterfall is really worth the trip, provided you talk loudly and attach a bell to your bag, which is absolutely essential in this region...
