Visiting Christ Church College

Christ Church College is among the most recognized colleges within the University of Oxford. Established in 1546, it has hosted numerous historical figures and served as inspiration for several works of fiction. Its imposing architecture and manicured gardens make it a frequent stop for visitors.

A college with a remarkable heritage

Christ Church stands as one of the largest colleges in the university. Its Tom Tower, designed by Christopher Wren, serves as a landmark for the city. The Great Quadrangle, with its blonde stone facades and elegant arcades, is a definitive example of academic architecture in Oxford.

A unique cathedral in Oxford

The college grounds house Christ Church Cathedral, a Gothic structure that also functions as the cathedral for the Diocese of Oxford. Its interior, featuring antique stained glass and a carved wood choir, provides a quiet space to observe a significant collection of religious and artistic history.

A well-known filming location

The Great Hall at Christ Church served as the inspiration for the Hogwarts dining hall in the Harry Potter films. While filming did not take place on-site, the atmosphere and long wooden tables immediately evoke the world of the famous wizard. The staircase leading to the hall was actually utilized for several scenes.

Opening hours

Operating hours at Christ Church College change depending on the time of year. Generally, the college welcomes visitors from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though hours are reduced during the winter months. It is smart to check the schedule in advance, as certain areas may close for university events.

The iconic university landmark

This is the must-see building in the university city! I loved the building's architecture, its Tom Tower, the staircases, and the huge dining hall. The decor, ceilings, and paintings are just as splendid. The magical atmosphere the place gives off fits the Harry Potter universe perfectly. The Great Hall at Hogwarts was actually filmed here. Remember to book your visit well in advance.

Very impressive

I highly recommend visiting this building with its incredible Gothic architecture. You really feel like you have been plunged into the world of Harry Potter. Some of the filming actually took place there. This place also houses the cathedral, which is just as spectacular on the inside as it is on the outside.
