Visiting the Historical Botanical Garden of Malaga, a natural treasure to explore
Editor's note, updated 09/22/2024
The Historical Botanical Garden of Malaga, also known as La Concepción, is a primary destination for those interested in plants and regional history. Located just a few miles from the city center, this garden stands out as one of the finest in Europe, blending botanical variety with historic architecture and quiet spaces.
A walk through history
Founded in 1855 by Jorge Loring and Amalia Heredia, the garden is a significant historic site. It was designed in a romantic style, featuring exotic flora sourced from the Americas, Australia, and Asia. As you walk through the shaded paths, you will see antique fountains, historic statues, and even archaeological remains that highlight the influential past of Malaga.
Exceptional flora
The botanical collection here is substantial. More than 25,000 plants representing 2,000 different species thrive on the grounds, including palms, bamboo, fruit trees, and a wide array of subtropical flowers. Among the garden highlights are the Avenue of Palms and the wisteria-covered pergola. Each season introduces new colors and scents, making it worth a visit at different times of the year.
A quiet escape
Despite the nearby highway, the Historical Botanical Garden of Malaga remains a reliable spot to get away from the city noise. With its green lawns and designated picnic areas, it is an ideal setting for a slow walk or a break in the outdoors. Visitors can also join guided tours to learn more about the extensive botanical history of the property.
Very pretty park with a lot of plants, flowers, fruits, and cacti to see. The layout with the ponds (where you can see fish and turtles), streams, small waterfalls, hills, and trees are beautiful to look at. It is a pleasure to walk around in. It takes a solid 2 hours to see the whole thing.
On the negative side, the park is a bit out of the way (you need a car to get there, unless there is a bus?), and the constant noise from the highway passing right next to it spoils the experience a little.
