What to know about Akumal Beach, the place of the turtles
Editor's note, updated May 16, 2025
Located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Akumal Beach is recognized for its clear water and active marine life, specifically sea turtles. It is ranked among the best beaches in the world by Avygeo members.
Observing turtles with ease
The name Akumal means "place of the turtles" in Mayan, and the reputation holds up. On the main beach, you can swim alongside green turtles or loggerheads within a bay protected by a coral reef. The shallow and calm water allows snorkeling enthusiasts to see them without needing advanced diving certifications. However, access to certain zones is regulated, and it is recommended to hire a certified guide to follow local wildlife protection rules.
A quiet and well-maintained coastline
The beach itself is lined with coconut palms and light sand, offering a more relaxed vibe than the larger neighboring resort towns. You will find several spots located directly on the water, including small grilled fish restaurants, bars serving fresh fruit juices, and modest hotels or bungalows. The atmosphere is centered on relaxation, free from loud music or late-night clubs. It is an easy place to spend the day doing nothing but enjoying the warm water and the view.
Other activities around Akumal
The immediate surroundings offer experiences to round out your beach time. A few miles away, you can visit the Yal-Ku Lagoon, a mix of fresh and salt water that provides a different type of snorkeling session.
Inland, cenotes and caves are accessible by car or bike, such as the Cenote Dos Ojos, popular for its natural limestone formations. If you are traveling with children, you can check out the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary, which offers educational tours. Finally, fans of Mayan history can easily organize a trip to the Tulum ruins, located less than 30 minutes away by car.

Akumal Beach was a huge disappointment for me. It is tiny and packed with tourists who came to see the turtles. The water is warm and crystal clear, but you have to pay extra to go snorkeling to see the turtles. They are all concentrated in one spot, right along with all the tourists. It is worth it for those who have never seen turtles before, but I do not think it is worth the trip from Tulum. There are plenty of other wonders in Mexico and the Yucatan to go see.
