Visiting Angers Castle, a medieval fortress and cultural treasure

Towering over the city of Angers and the Maine River, Angers Castle is as much about its sheer scale as its historical significance. Commissioned in the 13th century by Louis IX, also known as Saint Louis, it stands today as one of the best-preserved medieval structures in France.

Remarkable architecture and imposing walls

As you approach the fortress, the seventeen towers command your attention. Built from alternating bands of black schist and white limestone, this military architecture was designed to defend the kingdom against threats from Brittany and England. Walking along the ramparts, you get a bird-eye view of Angers, the old town, and the gardens below, all while soaking in the preserved medieval atmosphere.

The Apocalypse Tapestry, a unique masterpiece

The main reason to visit Angers Castle is to see the Apocalypse Tapestry, the largest medieval tapestry collection in existence.

Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou in the 14th century, it is housed in a gallery specifically climate-controlled for its preservation. This massive work spans over 100 meters (328 feet) and depicts the biblical visions of the Apostle John in incredible detail. The intensity of the colors and the narrative power of the scenes make it a highlight of any trip to Angers.

Gardens for a peaceful break

The castle grounds feature several notable gardens that offer a quiet, natural escape. The hanging gardens, situated atop the fortress walls, provide a serene walking path with views overlooking the city and the Maine River.

The Royal Lodge garden offers a floral space perfect for relaxing after touring the castle interiors. These gardens are at their best in the spring and summer, when the aromatic plants and seasonal flowers are in full bloom.

Beautiful monument with an iconic tapestry

I really enjoyed visiting this castle, which I find more impressive than the one in Nantes. The ramparts offer a really pleasant walk with some lovely views of the Maine river and the city. Inside, it is hard to miss the Apocalypse Tapestry, which is truly monumental. You could look at its details for hours! It is sumptuous.

A must-see in Angers

Old castle in the city center, well preserved, with pretty gardens, ramparts offering a nice view of Angers, and educational and fun exhibits (accessible to children).
Known for the huge Apocalypse Tapestry: more than 100 meters of centuries-old fabric depicting biblical scenes of the struggle between good and evil.
