Visiting the International Perfume Museum

Grasse, located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, is a city with a history inseparable from the world of fragrance. It is the natural home for the impressive International Perfume Museum.

History

The original perfume museum opened in 1918, driven by the vision of François Carnot, the son of the French president at the time. This was a private collection in the center of Grasse, and it was not until 1921 that the exhibits were significantly bolstered by numerous donations.

The current museum building was inaugurated in 1989, serving as a testament to local craftsmanship and expertise. In 2006, the institution underwent major renovations and expansion, increasing the total exhibition space to 3500 square meters.

In 2007, the museum opened its botanical garden. While large scale floral cultivation has decreased in the area, the museum maintains a wide variety of perfume-grade flowers for visitors. This space also serves to preserve local wildlife, particularly bird populations.

The International Perfume Museum

The museum showcases exhibits focused on the techniques and expertise required for perfume creation. This perspective is paired with a comprehensive history of how fragrance has been utilized throughout different eras.

You can explore soap making techniques, cosmetics production, and other hygiene products, ranging from traditional methods used in antiquity to the highly sophisticated processes of today. The exhibits are organized chronologically, leading you from ancient history to the modern day.

During the visit, younger guests can engage their senses through interactive games and dedicated olfactory workshops.

It is an educational and sensory experience that takes you on a journey through time and scent.

A fascinating journey

I visited this museum when I was a kid with my parents. I didn't know much about perfume, but I have a great memory of that experience. The museum offers a deep dive into the world of perfume through history while showcasing manufacturing and sales techniques. A really nice discovery accompanied by old bottles, soaps, and posters. I will go back with great pleasure. I also recommend you go see the Fragonard factory, which complements this visit very well.

Interesting and informative

Grasse and its surrounding areas are famous for perfume production. I found this museum very interesting and educational. It sheds light on the artisanal and later industrial know-how that has existed for many decades.
I think it is a great way to showcase made in France products.
