Visiting the City of Arts and Sciences
To find a parallel for this place, you would need to look toward science fiction, as nothing on Earth resembles the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. It is the only place where you can step inside a giant eye to watch a film or enter a structure shaped like a water lily to find yourself face to face with sea lions. What was intended as a complex dedicated to culture is much more than that. It pulls visitors into an experience that feels detached from time across six futuristic buildings that defy standard architecture with sheer audacity. The site opened in 1998, set in the former riverbed of the Turia river. Following a devastating flood in 1957, the river course was diverted, leaving behind the open space that now hosts this ambitious contemporary project.
Six exceptional futuristic structures
The project required a visionary architect, and it found one in Santiago Calatrava. The complex spans 350,000 square meters and is organized around three themes: arts, sciences, and nature. Shaped like an eye, the Hemisfèric houses an IMAX cinema and a planetarium, and it was the first building to open at the site. The Principe Felipe Science Museum is an interactive three-story space dedicated to technology, designed to resemble a dinosaur skeleton. The Umbracle is a sprawling elevated garden covering over 17,000 square meters, sheltered by floating arches and featuring an outdoor art gallery. The Oceanogràfic is a massive, striking structure modeled after a giant water lily. It is the largest aquarium in Europe, where 45,000 animals and 500 different species live across seven distinct zones. It easily warrants a several-hour visit. Shaped like a ship, the Palais des Arts Reina Sofia is a destination for music lovers, hosting a regular schedule of operas, ballets, and concerts in a high-impact setting. The Pont de l'Assut de l'Or (Assut de l'Or Bridge) allows you to cross over the Jardins de la Turia (Turia Gardens), and the Agora serves as a covered metallic plaza used for various events. The entire complex is visually arresting, interactive, and engaging.
If you are passing through Valencia, do not hesitate to go. You will discover a unique place at your own pace, on foot so you can really take it all in. You can check out museums that are worth the trip and easily move from one to the other. You can also admire the unique architecture. It is worth discovering with family, as a couple, or with friends.
