Visiting the Vienna State Opera, a singular experience

The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) stands as a cultural cornerstone in the heart of the Austrian capital. It offers a direct connection to the world of classical music and opera, drawing thousands of international visitors every year. Whether you are a dedicated audiophile or just curious, a visit to this iconic landmark is a highlight of any trip to Vienna.

A historic building at the city center

Opened in 1869 with a performance of Don Giovanni by Mozart, the Vienna State Opera embodies the architectural refinement of the 19th century. Its neo-Renaissance facade and lavish interiors command attention. Spend some time strolling along the famous Ringstrasse to appreciate its exterior before heading into the grand halls. Daily guided tours are available if you want to see what happens behind the scenes at this historic venue.

A deep and diverse program

Each season, the Vienna State Opera hosts more than 300 performances, featuring everything from grand opera and ballet to symphonic concerts. Signature works by composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Verdi are regularly on the bill. Attending a performance at this globally recognized house is a rare opportunity for anyone interested in high art.

Events for every interest

While opera tickets can be expensive, there are more affordable ways to attend, such as standing-room tickets that sell for a fraction of the cost. Additionally, live broadcasts are often projected onto a giant screen outside the building. In February, the famous Opera Ball turns the entire venue into a massive ballroom, providing an authentic look at the traditional Viennese social season.

Iconic spot in Vienna

Rather than doing the guided tour (too many people), I would recommend going to see a show.
You will be spoiled for choice, the programming is impressive.
Very well located right in the center, the walk around the area is very pleasant at night.

Truly magnificent

I waited too long to be able to catch a show at the opera, but I was still able to visit it thanks to a guided tour. The building is truly magnificent and sumptuous. It is the most beautiful opera house I have visited so far. To have the chance to see a performance there, you have to plan way in advance.

Unforgettable show

Opened in 1869, the Vienna State Opera, one of the most renowned in the world, is worth a visit just for its splendor and gigantic size. Its interior architecture, similar to the Opera Garnier, features a magnificent marble staircase, a foyer, and an immense, luxurious auditorium with vibrant acoustics that will delight music lovers. For a complete experience, seeing a show is a must. I attended a masterful performance of Tosca, which to this day remains my favorite opera memory. Individual screens make it easy to follow the work thanks to a wide choice of languages for the subtitles and a summary of the acts. Be careful, tickets go fast. Remember to book online several months before your trip.

Beautiful building for one of the world's best orchestras

I took a guided tour of the inside of this iconic Vienna building, since I wasn't able to attend a performance. The guide explained quite a bit about the backstage area, how the stage works, the artists, the seating categories, and gave tips on how to get the best prices (150 standing room tickets for less than €15 are sold for each performance 1 hour and 30 minutes before the start). They also provided info on the history of the monument, which notably served as a meeting place for the Austrian nobility.

Quick but very interesting guided tour

One of the most renowned opera houses in Europe and the world. I wasn't able to book a seat for a concert during my stay in Vienna. I consoled myself by taking a guided tour of the building (self-guided tours aren't allowed). It's huge and elegantly refined, definitely worth seeing!
