Visiting Ueno Zoo
Editor's note, updated 06/07/2024
Ueno Zoo, located in the Taito district of Tokyo, is a primary destination for animal enthusiasts and families traveling through Japan. Opened in 1882, it is the oldest zoo in Japan and houses a large collection of animals spread across approximately 14 hectares.
Giant pandas, a rare species
Ueno Zoo is famous for its giant pandas, the undisputed stars of the park. Their enclosures are designed to mimic their natural habitat, offering visitors a unique chance to see these majestic creatures up close. In addition to the pandas, the zoo houses over 3,000 animals representing about 400 species, including Siberian tigers, gorillas, Asian elephants, lions, and giraffes.
A zoo in two sections
The park is divided into two main sections, east and west, connected by a scenic monorail. The east section of the zoo is dedicated to large mammals, birds, and amphibians, while the west section features a variety of smaller animals, as well as the exceptional reptile house and an impressive vivarium.
The zoo also offers educational zones and interactive exhibits for children, promoting learning and awareness regarding wildlife conservation.
The setting of Ueno Zoo is pleasant, with many green spaces and well-maintained gardens, perfect for a relaxing walk. The zoo is located in Ueno Park, a vast green space that also houses several museums, a shrine, and a scenic pond.
The giant pandas are obviously the main attraction of this zoo. Their adorable faces and antics will make you melt. Kids and adults alike will have a moment of wonder and learning. You will encounter many land animals (elephants, giraffes) and aquatic ones too. Plenty to keep you busy for a full afternoon! If you have the time, take a walk through the vast Ueno Park as well.
