Visiting Jemaa el-Fnaa
Located in the southwest of the medina in Marrakech, Jemaa el-Fnaa serves as the heartbeat of the red city and a cultural landmark recognized by Unesco. It draws more than 2.5 million visitors every year.
Historically, the square functioned as a site for public executions. Criminals were beheaded here, and their heads were left on display. The name itself translates to Assembly of the Dead, Gathering of the Deceased, or Square of Nothingness.
Constant activity
The triangular square sits between the souks on one side and the Koutoubia Mosque and the royal palace on the other. It maintains a constant, high-energy atmosphere. During the day, you will find street performers, guerrabs (water sellers in traditional dress), fire-eaters, henna tattoo artists, snake charmers, monkey handlers, and fortune tellers. Once evening falls, food stalls fill the space, serving staples like couscous and tagine. Over 10,000 meals are served here daily.
A polarizing experience
More than just a transit point, Jemaa el-Fnaa is a requirement for any first-time visitor to Marrakech. While not everyone enjoys the medieval spectacle, it never fails to make an impression. It is a social hub where you can mingle with the locals, who are known for their hospitality, generosity, and humor.
Before heading into the thick of the crowd, find a vantage point to see the square in its entirety. The terrace of the Hotel de France, the oldest in the area, or the roof of the Brasserie du Glacier offer great views, especially at sunset. In 2001, Unesco designated the square as Intangible Cultural Heritage, as it captures the essence of Moroccan culture through music, dance, storytelling, cuisine, and folklore.
What a spectacle! You really feel worlds away here.
Between the snake charmers, the street vendors, and the colorful stalls covered in fruit, you do not know where to look. All your senses are on high alert!
At nightfall, I loved walking among the pop-up food stalls to discover the local specialties.
However, I have one complaint regarding the show with the tethered animals (monkeys)...
