Visiting Jemaa el-Fnaa

Located in the southwest of the medina in Marrakech, Jemaa el-Fnaa serves as the heartbeat of the red city and a cultural landmark recognized by Unesco. It draws more than 2.5 million visitors every year.

Historically, the square functioned as a site for public executions. Criminals were beheaded here, and their heads were left on display. The name itself translates to Assembly of the Dead, Gathering of the Deceased, or Square of Nothingness.

Constant activity

The triangular square sits between the souks on one side and the Koutoubia Mosque and the royal palace on the other. It maintains a constant, high-energy atmosphere. During the day, you will find street performers, guerrabs (water sellers in traditional dress), fire-eaters, henna tattoo artists, snake charmers, monkey handlers, and fortune tellers. Once evening falls, food stalls fill the space, serving staples like couscous and tagine. Over 10,000 meals are served here daily.

A polarizing experience

More than just a transit point, Jemaa el-Fnaa is a requirement for any first-time visitor to Marrakech. While not everyone enjoys the medieval spectacle, it never fails to make an impression. It is a social hub where you can mingle with the locals, who are known for their hospitality, generosity, and humor.

Before heading into the thick of the crowd, find a vantage point to see the square in its entirety. The terrace of the Hotel de France, the oldest in the area, or the roof of the Brasserie du Glacier offer great views, especially at sunset. In 2001, Unesco designated the square as Intangible Cultural Heritage, as it captures the essence of Moroccan culture through music, dance, storytelling, cuisine, and folklore.

The heart of Marrakech

What a spectacle! You really feel worlds away here.
Between the snake charmers, the street vendors, and the colorful stalls covered in fruit, you do not know where to look. All your senses are on high alert!
At nightfall, I loved walking among the pop-up food stalls to discover the local specialties.
However, I have one complaint regarding the show with the tethered animals (monkeys)...

The main square of Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fnaa is a must-see in Marrakech for tourists. After coming out of a tough round of haggling in the souks, we thought we would enjoy lunch on the square to take a break from the vendors. And yet, I remember we had to fight to avoid paying for all the appetizers we hadn't even ordered.

Aside from those few tourist traps, the heart of Marrakech is a really interesting area. You can see things like snake charmers there...

Lively and vibrant, but a bit staged

Lively at all hours of the day, cosmopolitan, offering market stalls with trinkets, local crafts but also Chinese goods, fragrant spices, street vendors, street performers, snake charmers... You have to see this square at least once, but honestly, all this display and all these touts really make it feel like a tourist trap. I invite you to explore more of Marrakech and Morocco.

The heart of the city

A very active, very crowded square that brings together in one place a lot of things you might see or buy all over the city.

Okay, sometimes it feels a bit touristy, staged for visitors, but it would be a shame not to soak up the atmosphere.

A must-see spot

A must-see spot when visiting Marrakech, located in the southwestern part of the Medina. To visit this place, it is best to go early in the morning (between 9 and 10 am) so you are not in the middle of hordes of tourists and to also avoid the peak heat of midday. The only downside to this place is the feeling of oppression I felt because of the merchants who solicit you very often and follow you during your walk.
