Bagatelle Park at a Glance

A favorite spot for locals to walk and relax, Bagatelle Park is tucked away inside the Bois de Boulogne. It is one of four distinct sites that make up the botanical garden system of Paris, alongside locations like the Parc Floral. The park was the result of a wager between Marie-Antoinette and her brother-in-law, the Comte d’Artois, who would later become Charles X. The grounds and the chateau were completed in just 64 days. You will find the rose garden, the romantic landscape design, and the overall atmosphere particularly striking.

The original layout was designed by landscape architect Thomas Blaikie in an Anglo-Chinese style. In 1835, Lord Seymour purchased the property. He expanded the grounds by 10 hectares and commissioned Par Varé to transform it into the English-style garden that was highly fashionable at the time. The city acquired the park in the early 20th century, leading to a major restoration project led by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, who served as the curator of the Bois de Boulogne. The famous rose garden, which features between 10,000 and 12,000 different varieties, gained international acclaim after winning a prestigious rose competition in 1907.

Beyond the mature trees and diverse flora, Bagatelle Park features footbridges, rock formations, grottoes, reflecting pools, and artificial waterfalls that create a serene, pastoral environment. Each season brings a different color palette and mood that appeals to both regular visitors and tourists alike. If you are visiting during the summer, the park hosts a festival dedicated to Chopin. Renowned pianists perform classical music concerts here by candlelight.

Pretty flowers by the thousands

At €2.50 for adult admission (free for kids under 7), you might wonder why you should pay when you could just visit the Bois de Boulogne for free.
Well, the Jardin de Bagatelle is worth the price. There are rose gardens with hundreds of rose varieties, little groves, a huge variety of fragrant plants, really well-done flower arrangements, ponds with small waterfalls, and a lookout at the top of a hill that you climb via a spiral path.
A really beautiful walk.

Just an FYI, picnics are allowed, but ball games are not.
