Visiting the Pompidou Center
Heads up: the museum will be closed for renovations for 5 years starting in late 2025
The premier contemporary art museum in Paris
A fixture of the Paris modern and contemporary art scene, the Pompidou Center, often called Beaubourg after the former parking lot it sits on, commands attention with its massive scale and eclectic collection. With over 3.5 million visitors each year, it serves as a central hub for students and artists alike.
A project driven by President Pompidou
Announced in 1969 by the former President of the same name, the building was designed to house a museum of modern art, a public library, and a center for industrial design. Inaugurated 8 years later, the architecture by Renzo Piano and Richards Rogers, both future winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, sparked plenty of debate. Critics compared it to an oil refinery, giving it mocking nicknames like Notre Dame of the Pipes or Pompidolium. Yet, its massive steel and glass structure, accented with bright colors, continues to be a major success. Visitors of all ages will find the creativity on display surprising, making it a top recommendation for family cultural outings.
Three venues in one
The center is divided into 3 main areas:
- A modern art museum, showcasing works from the 20th and 21st centuries, with regular exhibitions covering visual arts, film, photography, and design.
- The public information library, which provides access to thousands of books for on site use, as well as French and international newspapers.
- An acoustic and music research institute, which functions as a sort of sonic laboratory where numerous technical breakthroughs have been made.
The Pompidou Center is open to everyone and offers family-friendly tours along with free podcasts available on the museum website. On the first Sunday of every month at 4:00 PM, a guide leads a surprising free walk through the collections. It is well worth a visit.
