Musée Marmottan Monet

Visiting the Marmottan Monet Museum: an impressive Impressionist collection

Located in the heart of the 16th arrondissement of Paris, inside the former hunting lodge of the Duc de Valmy purchased in 1882 by art collector Jules Marmottan, this museum surprises visitors with its significant collection of works by Monet and famous Impressionist painters such as Manet, Pissaro, Sisley or Renoir, all within a lush, quiet, and intimate setting.

A family history

It was Paul, the son of Jules, who undertook major renovations to allow this private mansion to house and showcase the furniture and objects from the Napoleonic era for which he had a true passion.

The site became a museum in 1934. Two decades later, it received the collection of Victorine Donop de Mochy, daughter of Georges de Bellio, a Romanian-born physician who served as the doctor for all those famous painters.

Ten years later, the second son of Claude Monet bequeathed his father's work to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the owner of Giverny, as well as to the Marmottan Monet Museum.

Highlights to see

If you are short on time, head straight to the Claude Monet gallery where you can admire nearly a hundred significant canvases depicting the Normandy coast, views of Paris, the wonder of the water lilies, the land of the rising sun, Camille, the Rouen Cathedral, the mists of Vétheuil, and more. The atmosphere is quiet and reverent. Also of interest is the collection dedicated to Berthe Morisot, whose 80 works gathered here form the largest collection in the world dedicated to her.

A museum committed to education

Relatively unknown and tucked away, this museum remains dedicated to its role in preserving and sharing cultural heritage. During school breaks, educational tours are organized for children. Do not hesitate to check with the museum before your visit.

Pleasant surprise

Hidden away deep in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, this museum is a real gem of the capital, even if it is a bit small compared to the big Parisian museums.

It is a beautiful private mansion that houses permanent collections of impressionist paintings in rooms decorated with period furniture. Plus, there are regularly some very interesting temporary exhibits.
