Where to stay near Louvre Museum: the 4 areas to know in 2026

Ten of our seventeen members write the same thing, and that is what settles the night: one visit is not enough. « It is so vast that you will not have enough time in a single visit to see everything », writes MathildeFlor; Ariane, who has gone once a year for ten years, « still hasn't finished seeing the museum ». A museum that calls for two mornings is not chosen like a museum that takes an hour.

And then there are the late openings. « My advice, go for the late-night openings on Wednesday and Saturday. The crowds are smaller and you will even be alone in some rooms! », writes Solene_D; the museum now places them on Wednesday and Friday, until 9pm, and closes on Tuesday. Leaving at 9pm and walking home, or taking the metro: four areas share the nights, from 189 metres to 1.9 kilometres.

How long to the entrance, area by area?

These distances are STRAIGHT LINES, calculated on the positions of the addresses and of the museum entrance: on the scale of the 1st arrondissement, a driving route would follow the quays and teach a pedestrian nothing. No walking time is served, except the one a listing announces itself.

The Tuileries are 678 metres away, the Musée d'Orsay 661.

The Palais-Royal and Rue de Rivoli Place du Palais-Royal 189 metres away

Anyone who wants to leave the late opening and walk home

This is the only area from which the late opening can be left without the metro: Place du Palais-Royal is 189 metres from the entrance, and the Tuileries garden 678. Our two addresses here hold 9.0 and 8.9, with locations rated 9.7 and 9.8, the highest on these pages. In exchange, this is the 1st arrondissement: evening tables are expensive and the streets empty out as soon as the shops close.

Our address here has its own listing with us and two reviews from our members, which says more than a score about what you will find: « very welcoming staff », but a price one of the two calls « very high », and a swimming pool the other puts first.

Anyone adding Versailles or La Défense to the stay

This is the area for those who are not here only for the museum: our address is 1.86 kilometres from the entrance, but next to a station whose destinations our member lists, « trains to La Defense, the Palace of Versailles, and the RER A ». The Opéra Garnier is 1,243 metres away. The whole of Paris is covered by another guide of ours, neighbourhood by neighbourhood: the card below leads there.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Ten of our seventeen reviews say the same thing: one visit is not enough: This is the best established fact on this page, and it comes from our members, not from a brochure. « It is so vast that you will not have enough time in a single visit to see everything », writes MathildeFlor. Ariane, who goes once a year and has done so for ten years, « still hasn't finished seeing the museum ». Anne advises « devoting several days to it so as not to rush through ». The direct consequence for the night: the distance to the entrance is paid twice, going and coming back, then twice again the next day. At 189 metres that does not count; at 1.86 kilometres it makes four journeys.
  • The late openings end at 9pm, and that is where the area counts: « My advice, go for the late-night openings on Wednesday and Saturday. The crowds are smaller and you will even be alone in some rooms! », writes Solene_D. The museum now places its late openings on Wednesday and Friday, from 9am to 9pm, with a last entry one hour before closing; on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday it closes at 6pm, and on Tuesday it does not open. Shanour K says the same thing differently: « for a long time I was lucky enough to be able to go during the week, at off-peak hours ». Leaving at 9pm with the Palais-Royal 189 metres away, or with a bridge and two stations ahead, does not make the same evening.
  • What the ticket costs, and the four ways of not paying it: The price is $25* for residents and citizens of the European Economic Area, and $36* for other visitors: it is one of the few museums to distinguish between the two. Admission is free for under-18s, for EEA residents under 26, and for everyone on the first Friday of the month after 6pm, except in July and August. FloraC mentions it in her review: « it is free for under-26s! ». The museum recommends booking a time slot, including for free admissions, and Johanna confirms it in her own way: « I highly recommend booking your ticket online to avoid the long line at the entrance ».
  • Three of our four areas have a hotel listing with us, and its reviews: That is rare, and it changes what this page can say. The Hôtel d'Aubusson, 767 metres away, carries two reviews from our members that do not say the same thing: Colette remembers « very welcoming staff » who put you « at ease immediately », Sophielondon a « very high price, not an option to favour for family trips, but great for a romantic stay ». The Grand Hôtel Saint-Michel, 1,559 metres away, takes its argument from one sentence by nutricool: « the entrance is on a street that doesn't get much traffic, so it is quite quiet ». And the Philéas Lazare, 1.86 kilometres away, carries three, including Mary Me's warning about a « relatively small » room that is nonetheless « clean and comfortable ».
  • The Mona Lisa is not a reason to choose your night: Our reviews agree on an unexpected point: the best known painting is the one that disappoints. Emilee, the only one to give 4 out of 5 when the other sixteen give 5, writes « I have to admit I was disappointed by the Mona Lisa ». MathildeFlor explains the mechanism: « people gather around the most famous works, like the Mona Lisa, and leave the others behind », and concludes that « you can explore quietly once you are inside ». Johanna goes the same way: « for a more authentic experience, it is better to move away from the busiest areas ». A night 189 metres away buys exactly that: coming back for the rooms everybody walks through.
Where not to stay near Louvre Museum
  • Planning the museum on a Tuesday: it is closed that day.
  • Arriving less than an hour before closing: the last entry is at 5pm, or 8pm on late opening evenings.
  • Counting on a single visit: ten of our seventeen members write that it is not enough.
  • Coming without a booked time slot: the museum recommends one, even for free admissions.

FAQ: where to stay near Louvre Museum

Should you sleep next to the Louvre?
Yes if you plan to come back, and ten of our seventeen members write that one visit is not enough. The Palais-Royal area puts the entrance 189 metres away: the second morning then costs no journey at all, and the Wednesday or Friday late opening can be left on foot at 9pm. At 767 metres on the Left Bank there is a bridge; at 1.86 kilometres towards Saint-Lazare there is the metro, four times across two days.
When is the museum least busy?
Our members give two matching answers. « Go for the late-night openings [...] the crowds are smaller and you will even be alone in some rooms! », writes Solene_D; Shanour K preferred « off-peak hours » during the week. The late openings are now on Wednesday and Friday, until 9pm; on the other days closing is at 6pm, and on Tuesday the museum does not open. FlorenceT recommends the other end of the day: « coming very early in the morning if you don't want to queue for 3 hours ».
How much does admission cost?
$25* for residents and citizens of the European Economic Area, $36* for other visitors. It is free for under-18s, for EEA residents under 26, and for everyone on the first Friday of the month after 6pm, except in July and August. The museum recommends booking a time slot even when admission is free, and one of our reviews says it plainly: booking online avoids the queue.
Which area for doing two museums?
Saint-Germain and the Left Bank: the Musée d'Orsay is 661 metres from the Louvre entrance, on the same bank as the addresses in this area, and the cafés stay open after the late closing. Our address here has its own listing with us, with two reviews from our members: staff praised, a price judged very high, and a swimming pool one of the two puts first.
What if the stay is not only about the museum?
The Saint-Lazare area answers that, and it is our member Charlaine who explains it: the neighbouring station offers « trains to La Defense, the Palace of Versailles, and the RER A to the Chateau de Saint Germain en Laye ». The Opéra Garnier is 1,243 metres away, the museum 1.86 kilometres. For the rest of the capital, our Paris guide details seven neighbourhoods: this area's card leads there.
Should you aim for the Mona Lisa?
Our reviews invite you not to build the visit around her. Emilee, the only 4 among our seventeen reviews, writes that she was « disappointed by the Mona Lisa ». MathildeFlor observes that « people gather around the most famous works, like the Mona Lisa, and leave the others behind », which leaves the rest of the museum peaceful; Johanna advises « moving away from the busiest areas ». That is precisely what a night 189 metres away allows: coming back for the rooms everybody walks through.
