Stade San Siro de Milan

San Siro, an iconic stadium in Italy

San Siro Stadium, located in Milan, ranks among the most storied venues in Italian and international soccer. As a prime example of sports architecture from the 1920s, it serves as a pilgrimage site for fans of the game.

A venue dedicated to soccer

Construction of the stadium began in 1925 in the San Siro neighborhood. It was designed exclusively for soccer, and the original build did not even include an athletics track. Thanks to the wealthy president of AC Milan, the club had a brand new home just 13 months and 5 million lire (about EUR 2,600) later.

Over the decades, the stadium has undergone renovations to meet modern standards while preserving its historic character. The municipality of Milan now owns the site, and its significance extends beyond sports, representing a vital piece of Italian cultural and athletic heritage.

A premier sports destination

Today, AC Milan and Inter Milan are the two resident teams at this legendary stadium. While it is primarily a city venue, it remains a pillar of Italian soccer. For this reason, the Italian national team frequently chooses San Siro when hosting home matches.

Even the UEFA Champions League makes regular stops here. Its 80,000 seats provide a significant advantage for hosting major international events.

Beyond soccer, San Siro hosts a variety of other activities. Concerts by world-renowned musicians have taken place here, drawing major artists such as Madonna, Rihanna, or One Direction.

The stadium also offers guided tours that allow visitors to explore its history and impact on Italian culture. San Siro is more than just a pitch, it is a place where sports, music, and culture intersect, cementing its status as an Italian icon.

Why would you want to change it

I read that the home clubs wanted to change stadiums. I did not really understand if it was about modernizing this venue (that would make sense) or actually building a new structure somewhere else?

What a crime that would be, this stadium is impressive, it is a monument, there is not another one like it!

The temple of the tifosi

Stadium that hosts matches for 2 huge Italian soccer clubs. This stadium is on the same scale as these clubs: immense. A little facelift or cleaning wouldn't hurt, but you don't go there for that!

Impressive architecture

I saw an Inter Milan match there and I was impressed by the architecture of the stands, which go up so high. The stadium wasn't full, but the atmosphere was intense throughout the whole game. The fans in the curves really push their team for 90 minutes.

A monument in danger

I do not know why the 2 Milan clubs want to change stadiums, but I think San Siro just deserves a renovation to be among the best stadiums in Europe. It is big, its architecture is unique and impressive, and, what money cannot buy, the place is loaded with the glorious history of the 2 Milanese clubs.
