Visiting Da Nang, a coastal hub where the city meets the mountains
Da Nang, the fourth largest city in Vietnam, is a rapidly growing destination in the center of the country. With a strategic location between the cultural heritage of Hue and the historic town of Hoi An, Da Nang serves as a primary stop for travelers. This city manages a balance of modern development and local tradition, offering a mix of beaches, natural landscapes, and urban energy.
The beaches: coastal gems
Da Nang is known for its stretches of sand along the South China Sea. My Khe is often cited as one of the best beaches in Asia, making it a go-to spot for swimming, surfing, and paddleboarding. Further south, Non Nuoc beach sits against the Marble Mountains, providing a quieter, less crowded environment for a day by the water.
Natural landscapes
Beyond the coastline, Da Nang is defined by its terrain. The Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son), located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city center, are a cluster of five limestone and marble hills filled with caves, pagodas, and viewpoints. You can reach the top by stairs or by using an elevator for a view of the surrounding area.
Another landmark is the Son Tra Peninsula, often called Monkey Mountain. It is a green space where you might spot rare wildlife like the red-shanked douc langur. This is also where you will find the 67-meter (220-foot) Lady Buddha statue, which overlooks the bay of Da Nang.
Cultural and historical sites
While often viewed as a modern city, Da Nang has deep historical roots. The Museum of Cham Sculpture, founded in 1915, houses a significant collection of Cham artifacts that document the history of that ancient civilization. History enthusiasts also frequent the Linh Ung temple on the Son Tra Peninsula, known for its architecture and spiritual significance.
In the city center, the Da Nang Cathedral, built by the French in 1923, is a notable architectural curiosity. With its Gothic lines and pastel pink exterior, it stands out in a region where Buddhist temples are the norm.
Urban life and local food
Da Nang has a lively scene of markets, cafes, and restaurants. The Han market, located in the heart of the city, is the place to shop for souvenirs or try local specialties like banh xeo (savory Vietnamese crepes) or mi Quang (turmeric-infused rice noodles). For nightlife, head to the Dragon Bridge promenade, which lights up every evening for a display that draws a crowd.
When to go
The best time to visit Da Nang is between February and May, when the weather is dry and mild, perfect for beach days and sightseeing. A major local event is the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, typically held between April and June, which attracts teams and spectators from around the world.
How to get there
Flying into the city's international airport is the most practical choice. There are frequent domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City (1.5 hours, about 1,350,000 VND / $55) and Hanoi (1 hour 15 minutes, about 1,100,000 VND / $45), along with several international connections.
From nearby cities like Hue or Hoi An, you can take a bus (1 to 2 hours, 80,000 to 135,000 VND / $3 to $5) or a taxi (about 550,000 VND / $22 from Hoi An). Trains connecting Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to Da Nang are a scenic, though slower, option (16 to 17 hours, starting from 820,000 VND / $33).
I went to Da Nang to see the famous golden bridge held up by hands that you see everywhere on the internet. It turns out to be in an amusement park called Ba Na Hills, which is very popular with young Vietnamese couples. I had a really great day even if the park is very kitschy. It is accessible by one of the longest cable cars in the world. In Da Nang itself, there is another bridge, this time with a dragon, that breathes fire on the weekends.
