Visiting Ninh Binh, the gateway to the Inland Ha Long Bay

Among the city's cultural sites, the Ninh Binh Temple is a key stop. While it is modest compared to the massive Buddhist complexes nearby, this temple reflects the local spiritual history. If you want a casual walk, the banks of the Đáy River provide a pleasant path, especially in the late afternoon as the sun goes down.

While the city of Ninh Binh is peaceful, its immediate surroundings are packed with major sights. Just a few miles away, the Trang An complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a standout natural area. Boat trips here will take you through dramatic caves and past isolated temples in a quiet, serene setting.
The Hang Múa mountains, located 7 kilometers from the city, offer a different kind of experience. After climbing 500 steps, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the rice paddies and karst formations of the Tam Coc region.

Ninh Binh is known for its simple but flavorful food. Do not miss trying cơm cháy, a local specialty of crispy scorched rice, often served with goat meat, which is a regional staple. The best time to visit Ninh Binh is from March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and the landscape is lush. In May, the harvest season turns the rice fields into a golden mosaic, while local festivals, such as the one in Trang An, celebrate the region's traditions.
How to get there?
Ninh Binh is easily accessible from Hanoi, located about 100 kilometers away. Regular buses (2 hours, about 220,000 VND or $9) and trains (2 hours, about 135,000 VND or $5 for a standard ticket) connect the capital to the Ninh Binh train station. If you prefer more comfort, private car services or taxis are available for a 1.5-hour drive starting from 1,350,000 VND (about $54).
The inland Ha Long Bay is simply exceptional. You hop on a small rowboat and just let yourself drift along the water, right in the middle of spectacular scenery. Going through the caves adds a magical touch to the whole experience. Unlike the coastal Ha Long Bay, this place is much quieter, which makes the visit even more pleasant and relaxing. I loved this discovery and I recommend taking the time to go there.
