Things to do in Ninh Binh: must-see attractions

Visiting Ninh Binh, the gateway to the Inland Ha Long Bay

Located in northern Vietnam, Ninh Binh is a small city often overshadowed by the dramatic landscapes of its surrounding province, known as the Inland Ha Long Bay. However, it serves as an excellent home base for exploring the region while offering a genuine look at daily Vietnamese life. With its markets, temples, and quiet pace, Ninh Binh deserves a bit of your time before you head out to the countryside.

The heart of the city: a mix of modern and traditional

Ninh Binh is compact, where modern construction sits right next to historical markers. The city center is home to lively spots like the Ninh Binh Market, where you can browse local produce, grab street food, and see traditional crafts. It is an ideal setting to get a feel for how the locals live.

Among the city's cultural sites, the Ninh Binh Temple is a key stop. While it is modest compared to the massive Buddhist complexes nearby, this temple reflects the local spiritual history. If you want a casual walk, the banks of the Đáy River provide a pleasant path, especially in the late afternoon as the sun goes down.

Nearby: natural and cultural treasures

While the city of Ninh Binh is peaceful, its immediate surroundings are packed with major sights. Just a few miles away, the Trang An complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a standout natural area. Boat trips here will take you through dramatic caves and past isolated temples in a quiet, serene setting.

The Hang Múa mountains, located 7 kilometers from the city, offer a different kind of experience. After climbing 500 steps, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the rice paddies and karst formations of the Tam Coc region.

Local gastronomy to savor

Ninh Binh is known for its simple but flavorful food. Do not miss trying cơm cháy, a local specialty of crispy scorched rice, often served with goat meat, which is a regional staple. Local restaurants in the city serve home-style dishes in a casual atmosphere, perfect for getting a taste of Vietnamese culinary culture.

Activities and lodging in town

Even though Ninh Binh is a small city, it has the infrastructure to handle travelers. You can rent bicycles and motorcycles in town, which makes exploring the surrounding countryside much easier. Accommodations range from budget hotels to family-run guesthouses, often managed by locals who are happy to share tips on the best things to see and do.

An ideal base to explore the region

Ninh Binh stands out for its authenticity and calm atmosphere rather than being a flashy destination. The city is a perfect hub for reaching nearby natural and cultural sites while providing a modest, representative urban experience of local life. Between the markets, temples, and quiet strolls, Ninh Binh is a solid anchor for a trip to northern Vietnam.

When to go?

The best time to visit Ninh Binh is from March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and the landscape is lush. In May, the harvest season turns the rice fields into a golden mosaic, while local festivals, such as the one in Trang An, celebrate the region's traditions.

How to get there?

Ninh Binh is easily accessible from Hanoi, located about 100 kilometers away. Regular buses (2 hours, about 220,000 VND or $9) and trains (2 hours, about 135,000 VND or $5 for a standard ticket) connect the capital to the Ninh Binh train station. If you prefer more comfort, private car services or taxis are available for a 1.5-hour drive starting from 1,350,000 VND (about $54).

Exceptional

The inland Ha Long Bay is simply exceptional. You hop on a small rowboat and just let yourself drift along the water, right in the middle of spectacular scenery. Going through the caves adds a magical touch to the whole experience. Unlike the coastal Ha Long Bay, this place is much quieter, which makes the visit even more pleasant and relaxing. I loved this discovery and I recommend taking the time to go there.

Sensational scenery!

A must-do excursion from Hanoi! The scenery, with its mix of mountains, rivers, and rice paddies, is sublime. The traditional boat ride takes you through the three amazing caves of Tam Coc.

My visit also included the Hoa Lu temples, which are quite impressive, and the climb up Hang Mua peak. It is a workout, but it offers a breathtaking panoramic view! Ask your hotel about booking the tour. It is totally possible to organize it once you are there.

The land-based Halong Bay is stunning

Before heading to the very famous Ha Long Bay, I went to Ninh Binh, also known as the Ha Long Bay on land. I recommend a boat tour, where the women row with... their feet. Also, do not miss the beautiful hike to the viewpoint over the valley. It changes with the seasons and the rice harvest. A bike ride will also let you really enjoy the surrounding nature. Ninh Binh feels small and intimate, like a vacation village.
