Walt Disney World

#1 Walt Disney World +12 5

Visiting Orlando, from theme parks to the great outdoors

While Orlando is synonymous with theme parks, this Florida city offers far more than just a playground for tourists. For those planning an American getaway, Orlando provides a blend of entertainment, nature, and culture that appeals to every type of traveler.

Theme parks: a dream world for all ages

It is impossible to talk about Orlando without mentioning its famous theme parks. Walt Disney World, an iconic complex, comprises four theme parks: Magic Kingdom with its famous Cinderella Castle, Epcot for a futuristic experience, Disney's Hollywood Studios featuring movie-inspired attractions, and Animal Kingdom, which functions as both a zoo and an ecological park.

For thrill-seekers, Universal Studios and its neighbor Islands of Adventure promise captivating experiences, especially for Harry Potter fans who can visit the school of witchcraft in a detailed recreation. Finally, the Volcano Bay water park, also by Universal, is a go-to spot to cool off under the Florida sun.

The other side of Orlando: nature and the outdoors

Orlando is also a city where nature is never far away. Lake Eola, right in the heart of downtown, provides a peaceful green space to unwind. Rent a swan-shaped paddle boat or walk the perimeter of the lake to enjoy this quiet pocket of the city. If you prefer wilder spaces, head to Wekiwa Springs State Park, where you can kayak in crystal-clear water, spot local wildlife, or hike trails surrounded by lush vegetation. Another local favorite is Shingle Creek Regional Park, which is perfect for hiking or a bike ride away from the tourist crowds. In Orlando, Florida reveals its greener and more authentic side.

Shopping, culture, and city entertainment

This destination is not short on malls and designer boutiques for those looking to shop. The Mall at Millenia and Orlando International Premium Outlets are prime spots for finding major brands at reduced prices. On the cultural side, the Orlando Museum of Art and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts host high-quality exhibits and performances for those who want to immerse themselves in the local arts scene. For a night out, head to the Thornton Park neighborhood with its trendy restaurants, cafes, and bars, or hit Church Street for a lively, festive atmosphere.

Nearby excursions: the space center and the Atlantic coast

An hour's drive from Orlando, the Kennedy Space Center offers a deep dive into the history of American space exploration. You can view retired rockets, explore the history of the space program, and even catch a launch in person if your trip aligns with a scheduled mission. Beach and nature lovers can head to the Atlantic coast for a day on the sands of Cocoa Beach or Daytona Beach, both known for their wide stretches of white sand and surf culture, much like a low-key version of Southern California beaches.

When to go

The best time to visit Orlando is between March and May, when the weather is mild with temperatures around 77°F (25°C) and less rainfall than in the summer. Crowds are also much lighter than during the peak summer months. Avoid the summer, particularly from June to September, as the heat and humidity are intense and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent.

How to get there

A direct flight from Europe to Orlando takes about 10 hours and typically costs between 500€ and 900€ ($540, $975) round trip. Flights with layovers can sometimes offer better value.
