Things to do in Tamerza: must-see attractions

Visiting Tamerza, an oasis perched in the desert

A former Berber town, Tamerza stands out for its dramatic setting between arid mountain ranges and lush green palm groves. Located in the southwest of Tunisia, just a short distance from the Algerian border, it draws travelers looking for expansive landscapes and a chance to experience a preserved natural environment.

A landscape of striking contrasts

The primary draw of Tamerza is its geography. The old medina, now in ruins, sits above a deep canyon, offering sweeping views of the surrounding terrain.

One of the most famous sites is the Tamerza waterfall, a cascade fed by a natural spring that provides a sharp contrast to the dry hills nearby. Not far away, the Midès canyon, carved by centuries of erosion, features steep, colorful rock walls that are a major draw for hikers and photographers.

A historical and cultural footprint

While Tamerza is primarily a nature destination, it also holds remnants of its past. The old medina, abandoned after the floods of 1969, still contains the stone foundations of traditional houses and narrow alleyways that feel frozen in time.

Just a few miles away, the city of Tozeur, reachable in under an hour, offers a deeper look into the history and culture of southern Tunisia.

Activities and excursions

Visitors in Tamerza have several ways to explore the region. Hiking or 4x4 excursions allow you to navigate the desert tracks and surrounding gorges. Camel rides are also available for a slower pace. For those looking for more speed, it is possible to traverse the sandy trails on a quad bike.

Climate and nature: life adapted to the desert

Despite its semi-desert environment, Tamerza benefits from an oasis where date palms and other drought-resistant plants thrive. The region is also home to wildlife like the fennec fox and various migratory birds. The best time to visit is during the spring or fall, when temperatures remain comfortable.

Is it safe to stay in Tamerza?

Tamerza is generally a safe destination for travelers, though it is wise to remain aware of your surroundings given its proximity to the Algerian border. While the region is not currently experiencing direct tension, always check the latest travel advisories from the US Department of State before your trip, and avoid traveling into isolated desert areas without a local guide.

Authentic flavors of southern Tunisia

Local cuisine highlights spicy flavors and desert staples. Among the dishes to try, couscous with mechoui is a hearty option often served with roasted vegetables and spices. Deglet Nour dates, grown in the local area, are prized for their soft texture and sweet flavor.

For drinks, mint tea, sometimes topped with pine nuts, is a local staple and the perfect way to cool down after a day in the sun.

Where to eat?

  • Dar Hi Life (center): A restaurant serving refined cuisine that highlights local products in a modern, elegant space.
  • Le Palmier (near the oasis): A more traditional spot, ideal for a homemade couscous.
  • Café Oasis (near the waterfall): A casual place to grab a tea or sample local Tunisian pastries.

Where to stay?

  • Hotel Tamerza Palace (center): An upscale property featuring a spa and panoramic views of the mountains.
  • Résidence El Menzel (near the canyon): A welcoming guesthouse that offers a more local, intimate experience.
  • Camping Oasis (outside the city): An inexpensive option for those who want to sleep under the stars.

When to go?

The climate in Tamerza is arid, with very hot summers and mild winters. The best times to visit are March-April and October-November, when temperatures hover around 77°F (25°C).

If you enjoy festivals, you can also catch cultural events in Tozeur, such as the Oasis Festival held in December.

How to get there?

Tamerza is accessed via Tozeur, which houses the nearest airport. Plan for about 1 hour of driving by car or shared taxi to reach the town. From Tunis, it is a 6-hour drive or bus ride. Flights to Tozeur generally range from 100 to 300 TND (about $32 to $97) depending on the season.

How to get around?

The best way to explore Tamerza and its surroundings is by having your own vehicle, specifically a 4x4 if you plan to head out onto the desert tracks. You can also book organized excursions departing from Tozeur.

Magical ruins on the edge of a huge palm grove

I found Tamerza (or Tameghza) a bit by chance while looking for a hotel in a place far from the world, unusual and comfortable. As it happens, the Tamerza Palace hotel brings all those qualities together, along with a pool, an adorable staff, and above all, an incredible view of the ruins of the old Berber village of Tamerza. This village, built on the edge of a magnificent palm grove, was destroyed by deadly floods in the 60s. What remains are magical vestiges that seem to watch over the palm grove, the surrounding hills, and the new village built a few kilometers away. Magical at nightfall!

Tamerza is located about 70 kilometers from Tozeur, which has an international airport. It can be the starting point for several nice star-shaped trips in the surrounding area (waterfalls, palm groves, small quiet villages, the end of the Rommel track). Local guides even come to offer their services at the hotel door. It really allowed me to recharge my batteries and get a complete change of scenery for a few days. However, check the government website for the security level of the region before you leave because Tamerza is not far from the border with Algeria and anti-terrorist operations are sometimes organized in the area.
