Holafly: Unlimited data eSIM for stress-free travel

Holafly is a mobile-first provider specialized in data packages for international travelers. The company offers its own prepaid plans through roaming agreements with local carriers in nearly every destination.

Founded in 2017 in Murcia, Spain, by Pedro Maiquez and Yingan Hu, the company is now headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. It was backed by the Lanzadera accelerator. With over 15 million travelers served, Holafly holds a 4.6/5 rating on Trustpilot (based on over 82,000 reviews as of March 2026) and 4.8/5 on the iOS App Store (22,000 ratings). Its app has surpassed one million downloads on Google Play.

Coverage, plans, and pricing

The service covers more than 270 destinations worldwide. Holafly's signature feature is that all plans offer unlimited data. You do not need to choose a specific gigabyte bucket, you simply select your destination and the desired duration (from 1 to 90 days).

Three types of International eSIM are available:

  • Country eSIM: For a single country (France, Japan, USA, Morocco, Turkey, and more)
  • Regional eSIM: Covers multiple countries within a specific zone (Europe with 33+ countries, Asia with 16 countries, North America, Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, and more)
  • Global eSIM: Works in over 110 countries across every continent

Holafly also offers a monthly subscription with no long-term commitment called Holafly Plans, starting at $49.90/month (25 GB) or $64.90/month (unlimited data), covering more than 170 countries.

Installation and user experience

Purchases are made through the website or the mobile app (iOS and Android). After payment (credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay), a QR code is delivered via email in seconds.

Compatibility

The eSIM works on compatible smartphones including iPhone XS and later models, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3 and later, along with most recent Android flagships. Over 200 models are supported. Holafly provides a compatibility check tool on its website.

⚠️ Verify that your phone is not carrier-locked before purchasing. A locked smartphone will not be able to use a Holafly eSIM.

Dual SIM and primary number

Your physical SIM card remains active alongside the Holafly eSIM. In practice, you use the eSIM for data while your regular SIM handles calls and SMS (essential for banking codes or 2FA). Remember to disable mobile data on your primary SIM to avoid unintended roaming charges.

  • Pre-departure installation: The eSIM can be installed at home using the QR code while connected to Wi-Fi. The plan only activates once you arrive at your destination.
  • Usage tracking: The app allows you to monitor remaining plan duration and connection status in real time.
  • Top-ups during travel: You can purchase additional days directly through the app or the customer portal to extend your plan.
  • Loyalty program: Every purchase earns HolaCoins through the Holafly Travel Club (100 HolaCoins equals 1 € (about $1.10) off a future purchase).
  • 24/7 Support: Customer service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via in-app chat and WhatsApp. There is no phone support.

Conditions and transparency

"Unlimited" plans: What to know

Holafly plans provide access to data without a hard cap. However, a Fair Use Policy applies. The local partner carrier may temporarily throttle speeds if usage is deemed excessive, typically after exceeding roughly 90 GB per month. This speed reduction lasts for a maximum of 24 hours before returning to normal.

Connection speeds depend on the available local network, such as 4G, LTE, or sometimes 5G. In urban areas, user reports generally indicate speeds of 20 to 50 Mbps. In rural or remote areas, coverage depends entirely on local infrastructure.

Hotspot sharing

Tethering is available but limited. Depending on the destination, the hotspot is capped between 500 MB and 1 GB per day. This quota refreshes daily. For monthly subscriptions (Holafly Plans), hotspot data may be unlimited depending on the specific tier. We recommend checking the technical specifications for your destination before buying.

Data and expiration

The plan begins the moment you activate it at your destination, not at the time of purchase. Unused data does not roll over. Once the period ends, the plan expires. After canceling a monthly subscription, an Always On service automatically activates, offering 1 GB of free data in over 70 destinations.

Refunds

Holafly offers a refund guarantee for up to 6 months after purchase in several cases, including trip cancellations, device incompatibility, or service-related connection issues. Refunds may be full or partial depending on the situation.

What Holafly eSIM does not include

The vast majority of plans are data-only. There are no traditional phone calls or SMS included with the Holafly eSIM. You should use WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Skype over data instead. There is no local phone number either, except for monthly subscriptions (Holafly Plans) which include a US, UK, or Canada number for receiving SMS.

Frequent pros from user reviews

  • Fast and intuitive installation via QR code or app
  • Reliable coverage in urban areas for popular destinations like Europe, USA, Japan, and Southeast Asia
  • Responsive customer support available 24/7
  • Peace of mind with unlimited data, so there is no meter to watch
  • Refund guarantee extended up to 6 months
  • Regional plans are convenient for multi-country trips

Potential drawbacks to watch for

  • Hotspot is limited to 500 MB to 1 GB per day, which is restrictive if you need to tether a laptop
  • Speed throttling reported after heavy usage like prolonged streaming or large downloads
  • Pricing can be higher than local SIM cards for long stays in a single country
  • Data-only service means no traditional calls or SMS via the eSIM
  • Some reports of activation difficulties in less common destinations
  • No limited-volume, lower-cost plans available, as the all-unlimited model does not suit every traveler
