What to know about Civitatis

Civitatis is an online travel agency specializing in booking tours, excursions, and guided activities around the world.

Origins and founding

In 2008, Alberto Gutiérrez launched Civitatis in Madrid, driven by a desire to provide Spanish-speaking travelers with a centralized hub for booking tourist activities. His goal was to streamline the discovery and booking process for authentic local experiences.

Growth and international expansion

Since its inception, Civitatis has seen significant growth. In 2024, the company secured $50 million (about €46 million) in funding to support its expansion in the travel experiences market. This injection of capital is aimed at strengthening its international footprint and diversifying its catalog.

Today, Civitatis offers over 80,000 experiences across 3,600 destinations worldwide, serving a customer base of 14 million users. While primarily focused on the Spanish-speaking market, the platform is also available in English, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

A wide range of Show and activity tickets

Civitatis features a broad spectrum of options, including guided tours, day excursions, tickets for attractions, and transfers. The company emphasizes a rigorous vetting process for its local partners to ensure quality and unique experiences.

The benefits of using Civitatis

  • The platform distinguishes itself by vetting and selecting one specific provider per activity in each destination, which helps maintain a curated selection.
  • Furthermore, Civitatis commits to selling tickets at the official price, without markups.
  • Finally, the brand adheres to strict safety standards for adventure-based activities.

3 "free" guided tours in Budapest

I tested the Civitatis free tours in Budapest:

- Jewish Quarter tour in French: interesting, but nothing more. The guide wasn't very comfortable, but we still learned a few things.
- English tour of historic Pest, and the Castle: awesome for both! The guide, Mate, is a local guide passionate about history who knows how to share his passion through his enthusiasm, his anecdotes, and his sharp knowledge of historical stories. Funny, educational, and engaging (he regularly challenges us to find or understand certain things), I think it's a truly great way to discover the city.

Regarding the benefits of this type of tour:
- No commitment, you book online without leaving a credit card footprint
- If you need to cancel, do it online out of courtesy, it's free of charge
- If you don't like the tour, you can leave at any time without staying until the end. Same thing: just let the guide know
- The tip paid at the end is at your discretion, depending on your appreciation. But keep in mind that the guide pays a commission of about €4 to Civitatis for each participant. If you give less, the guide will have paid out of pocket to provide you with a service...

Anyway, I would do it again without hesitation, and not necessarily just while traveling either. Why not try it in Paris?

Really great guided tour of Rome

I used Civitatis for a walking tour of Rome. We ended up with a super interesting and informative guide who had so many historical anecdotes about the places we visited. For a city like Rome, there is just so much to learn with all that history, so it would have been a shame to miss out on this experience.
