What to know about KLM?

The origins of KLM: a pioneer in European skies

Founded in 1919 by Albert Plesman, KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij) is one of the oldest airlines in the world still operating under its original name. Based in Amsterdam, its initial goal was to connect the Netherlands to the rest of the world using aviation, which was an emerging industry at the time. From the start, KLM established itself as a pioneer, launching innovative international routes and distinguishing itself through a focus on innovation and safety.

Today, KLM's headquarters remain at Schiphol Airport, a strategic hub that facilitates connections to more than 170 destinations worldwide. With its Dutch roots, the airline maintains a strong link to its heritage while looking toward the future.

A strategic partnership with Air France and SkyTeam

In 2004, KLM took a major step by merging with Air France to form the Air France-KLM group. This alliance pooled the strengths of both companies, creating one of the global leaders in aviation. Thanks to this merger, KLM benefits from reinforced cooperation on operational, financial, and logistical levels, all while maintaining its distinct identity.

Furthermore, KLM is a founding member of SkyTeam, an international alliance comprising 19 airlines. This strategic partnership offers passengers a vast global network, shared benefits like VIP lounges, and a unified loyalty program, Flying Blue. These alliances allow KLM to strengthen its position against increased international competition.

KLM: quality, innovation, and environmental commitment

KLM distinguishes itself through a focus on the customer experience, featuring modern cabins, high-end service, and an attractive loyalty program. In parallel, the airline invests in environmental initiatives, such as the use of sustainable aviation fuels, carbon offsetting, and the optimization of flight paths to reduce emissions.

Compared to its competitors, KLM stands out for its commitment to sustainability and its direct relationship with customers, particularly via social media. With a strong identity, an extensive network built through its alliances, and a forward-looking approach, KLM remains a top-tier reference in the airline industry.

You are on your own if their flight is delayed

Nothing special to say about the flight itself... but on my return trip from New York to Paris, with a layover in Amsterdam, the New York to Amsterdam flight was delayed. It was going to be tight for the connection, and the airline did nothing to make things easier for me.

At the Amsterdam airport, the ground staff just told me to run. So I ran as hard as I could for a long distance (that airport is huge!), with my backpack, waiting in line at border control, and I ended up catching my second flight just in the nick of time.

But there was no help from KLM. Not a word to say that the flight, or at least the boarding, was being held for me until the last minute, or any effort to create a priority lane at border control. In short, we are late, but it is up to you to make up the time.
