Visiting Sainte Anne Marine National Park

Located just 3 miles off the coast of Mahé, Sainte Anne Marine National Park is a flagship nature reserve in the Seychelles. Established in 1973, it became the first marine park in the Indian Ocean, encompassing six islands and a vast protected marine zone. This sanctuary offers visitors a look into a well-preserved ecosystem that blends white sand beaches, coral reefs, and tropical forests.

The park includes the islands of Sainte-Anne, Cerf, Longue, Moyenne, Ronde, and Île Cachée. Each has its own character:

  • Sainte-Anne: The largest, home to the only resort complex in the park.
  • Cerf: Known for its quiet beaches and hiking trails.
  • Longue: Once used as a quarantine station, it is now uninhabited.
  • Moyenne: Made famous by Brendon Grimshaw, a British man who lived there as a hermit and worked for its preservation.
  • Ronde: Offers exceptional views of the surrounding islands.
  • Île Cachée: A true haven for seabirds.

Access to the park is exclusively by boat, which helps protect its environment.

Water sports and underwater discovery

The park is a prime spot for snorkeling and diving. The crystal-clear waters house a multitude of coral reefs populated by tropical fish. Glass-bottom boat excursions allow you to observe marine life without getting wet. It is also possible to go kayaking or paddleboarding around the islands, offering a unique perspective on the coastline.

Exceptional flora and fauna

The park is a true biodiversity sanctuary. You will find some of the most extensive seagrass beds in the Seychelles, serving as a refuge for many species. Among the marine inhabitants, you can spot blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, parrotfish, and green turtles that come to nest on the beaches. The islands also host seabirds, fruit bats, and a rich endemic flora, including the famous coco de mer.

Where to stay

The island of Sainte-Anne is sparsely populated, with about 40 residents. The main accommodation option is the Club Med Seychelles, which despite its isolation, has all the necessary amenities for a luxury trip to the Seychelles. This eco-chic complex includes spacious villas, varied restaurants, and a multitude of activities. Its commitment to the environment is reflected in initiatives such as the elimination of single-use plastics and the preservation of coral reefs.

What to explore nearby

From the park, it is easy to reach Mahé to explore the capital Victoria, visit the local market, or hike in the Morne Seychellois National Park. Neighboring islands, such as Praslin and La Digue, are also accessible for day trips. These islands offer idyllic beaches, nature reserves, and an immersion into Seychellois Creole culture.

Practical tips for visitors

Before visiting the park, it is recommended to check the weather conditions and tides. Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and appropriate walking shoes. Visitors must also respect park rules to preserve this fragile ecosystem: do not touch the coral, do not feed the animals, and do not take shells or plants.
