Visiting Itsukushima Shrine, a floating jewel near Hiroshima
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Itsukushima Shrine is one of the most iconic temples in Japan. Located on the island of Miyajima in Hatsukaichi, this Shinto shrine appears to float on the water during high tide, creating a singular visual experience. A visit to this sacred site provides a close look at traditional Japanese architecture within a protected natural environment.
A world-famous floating torii
The large vermilion torii gate, which marks the symbolic entrance to the shrine, is the most recognizable feature of the site. Standing nearly 16 meters tall, it rises from the Seto Inland Sea. At high tide, it appears to emerge directly from the water. You can walk out to the base of the gate at low tide, which provides a completely different perspective on this structure that has stood since the 12th century.
A shrine built on stilts
The main shrine, dedicated to the three deities of the sea and sailors, rests on stilts to create the illusion of floating. The red wooden buildings, connected by covered walkways, house several pavilions and a Noh theater that is still used for traditional performances. Walking through the complex allows you to appreciate the precision of the architecture and the spiritual atmosphere of the site.
Exploring the island of Miyajima
Beyond the shrine, the island of Miyajima is full of sites to explore. Mount Misen, accessible by ropeway or hiking trails, offers panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. The Daishō-in temple, which sees fewer crowds, offers a more intimate look at Japanese Buddhism. Finally, the streets of the local town are the place to try regional specialties like momiji manju, which are maple leaf-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste.
It would be a shame not to take a trip to the island of Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, if you are in the Hiroshima area. Known for its large torii gate and free-roaming deer, it is an island full of surprises. Despite the tourist crowds near the ferry terminal, you will find small artisans, magnificent parks, and some great hikes to do! The view from Mount Misen overlooks the entire bay, and it is a beautiful sight with lovely shrines to explore.
