Visiting Amalienborg Palace, a symbol of the Danish monarchy
Located near the waterfront district of Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace serves as the official residence of the Danish royal family and stands as one of Copenhagen's most recognizable landmarks. The complex consists of four identical palaces arranged around an elegant central square, a hallmark of restrained Rococo architecture.
A royal residence in use
Built in the mid-18th century, Amalienborg Palace remains an active, functioning residence today. Two of the palaces are occupied by the royal family, including Queen Margrethe II. It is common to see the daily movements of the Royal Life Guards, particularly during the changing of the guard. This ceremony draws crowds every day, offering a look at a ritual steeped in tradition and military precision.
Amalienborg Museum, a window into royal history
For those interested in history, a visit to the Amalienborg Museum, housed within the Palais Christian VIII (Christian VIII Palace), provides a look into the lives of Danish sovereigns. You will find a collection featuring antique furniture, royal costumes, personal artifacts, and artwork sourced directly from the private collections of the royal family.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into specific aspects of royal life in Denmark.
Architecture and nearby walks
The central square of Amalienborg, framed by four nearly identical palaces, is a study in architectural symmetry. Designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved, the square features an imposing equestrian statue of King Frederik V at its center.
Just a short walk away, the jardin d’Amalie (Amalie Garden), with its manicured lawns, offers a quiet spot for a break. Nearby, the waterfront promenade provides a clear view of the Copenhagen Opera House located across the harbor.

Amalienborg Palace is very interesting. The tour is pretty quick, but you should still see it. I especially recommend going to catch the changing of the guard, which takes place every day at noon. The military display is really impressive. Try to get there early so you can get a good spot.
