Visiting Manuel Antonio National Park
Some of the finest beaches in Costa Rica
Manuel Antonio National Park, located on the Pacific coast near Quepos, is known for its pristine beaches. Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur are reachable via well-maintained trails and provide an ideal setting to relax or swim in calm waters. Framed by thick coastal vegetation, these beaches balance natural scenery with a relaxed atmosphere, though their popularity means they can get busy during the high season.
Abundant and accessible wildlife
Manuel Antonio is a prime spot for wildlife viewing. The park trails wind through tropical forests home to capuchin monkeys, sloths, coatis, and a wide array of tropical birds. You will often find these animals just a few yards away. Local guides are available at the entrance to provide context, and they carry telescopes to help you spot the more elusive species.
Trails for every ability
The park features several marked trails suited for different fitness levels. The Sendero Principal (Main Trail) is flat and straightforward, connecting the entrance to the beaches while cutting through dense forest. For expansive views, the Sendero Punta Catedral (Cathedral Point Trail) leads to a headland overlooking the ocean and nearby islands. These paths allow you to explore a variety of landscapes, from forest and mangroves to coastal overlooks.
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Manuel Antonio National Park is great for families.
I found it really easy to get to and get around.
The well-maintained trails lead to both beaches and the jungle.
The reserve is home to lots of animals, and I saw monkeys, coatis, and reptiles. There are plenty of birds, too.
On the downside, the crowds are everywhere, so get away from them by following the more isolated trails!
