Visiting the Les Quatre Temps shopping center
The Les Quatre Temps shopping center, rebranded as Westfield Les Quatre Temps in 2019, sits in the heart of the La Défense business district. Located within the city of Puteaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, it draws over 40 million visitors every year.
History
The initial 1970 project, known as Tête Défense, was planned as a massive tower aligned with the Arc de Triomphe. It was intended to house a relatively modest shopping area.
That plan never moved forward, but a 1972 decision solidified the construction of a dedicated shopping center. Architects Dimitrijevic and Lagneau led the design, and the 110,000 square meter complex was finally completed in 1982.
Instead of the original plan for luxury boutiques, the space opened with mass-market retailers and a three-story hypermarket.
Major renovations took place in 2006 and 2008. The interiors, facades, and parking facilities were all overhauled. An extension was also added, featuring 22 restaurants and a 16-screen cinema.
In 2020, another large-scale project began, focusing on the main interior plaza known as La Clairière (The Clearing). This work involved replacing flooring and modifying storefront facades, marking another massive construction phase for the site.
The Les Quatre Temps shopping center
This is one of the most prominent shopping centers in France. It ranks first in total revenue, bringing in roughly 1 billion EUR (about $1.08 billion) annually. It also holds the top spot for foot traffic, consistently exceeding 40 million visitors each year. It is second in total surface area, trailing only the Belle Epine center.
To put the scale into numbers, the center houses 224 shops across 141,000 square meters, along with 56 restaurants and 6,500 parking spaces.
It is a shopping destination built to match the oversized proportions of this business district.
I really do not like this shopping center. I went there several times because I worked nearby, and it is pretty convenient to be able to do your shopping after leaving the office. But since then, I have not gone back. The atmosphere is not very welcoming, even a little creepy at night. I saw groups of kids planning to steal things. On top of that, it is constantly overcrowded during the day. The neighborhood does not have much to offer either, other than the Defense Arena. If you do not have anything else to do in the area, I recommend that you go do your shopping elsewhere.
