Visiting Gadisar Lake, an oasis of calm in the desert
Located on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, Gadisar Lake is a peaceful man-made reservoir dating back to the 14th century. It was commissioned by Maharaja Gadsi Singh to serve as the primary water supply for the city. While it may not be the most famous attraction in the region, it provides a quiet escape for those looking for a moment of serenity and scenic views.
A stroll around the water
Surrounded by temples, pavilions, and intricately carved cenotaphs, Gadisar Lake is built for slow exploration. The entrance walkway, marked by the majestic Tilon ki Pol (Tilon Gate), is a standout spot for photography. Walking around the perimeter allows you to view local architecture while enjoying the quiet atmosphere. During the winter months, birdwatchers will spot migratory birds resting on the water.
Out on the water
To see the lake from a different angle, you can rent a small boat for a modest fee, typically around 100 to 200 INR (about $1-2.50). This simple activity provides a unique perspective on the surrounding structures and the way the golden desert light reflects off the water. The ride is quiet and ideal for anyone wanting to step away from the activity of Jaisalmer for a short while.
An ideal spot for sunsets
Gadisar Lake is best visited at dusk, when the sun dips behind the dunes and casts a warm, golden light over the pavilions and temples. While the area can attract visitors, it remains relatively tranquil compared to the more crowded sites within the city center of Jaisalmer.
I really loved visiting this lake, surrounded by temples. The site is quite peaceful, which is pretty rare in India. I found that there weren't many tourists, unlike at the fort, which makes it easier to enjoy the place. I think you can go boating on it, but I didn't try it.
