Qatar at a glance

Qatar is a tiny peninsula in the Middle East, yet it is constantly in the headlines. Beyond the noise, it makes for a compelling stopover. If you are flying through, it is worth stepping out to see what the country offers in terms of culture and terrain.

Skyscrapers and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha

You can cover the highlights of Doha, the capital, in a single day. Start with a walk along the Corniche. This seven-kilometer waterfront promenade traces the bay and offers a clear view of the city skyline. The most striking glass and steel towers are clustered at the northern end. To trade the modern architecture for something more traditional, head into the maze of the Souq Waqif. This is the authentic heart of the city, where locals actually spend their time. Do not miss the Museum of Islamic Art, which sits on its own island. It houses an extensive collection of artifacts inside a structure designed to echo the aesthetic of desert forts.

Inland Sea, desert, and pearl diving history

Qatar has its own version of massive development projects, such as The Pearl, a series of man-made islands. If you prefer natural landscapes to luxury real estate, head south to the Inland Sea. You will need a 4x4 to navigate the dunes of the southern erg to reach the Khor al-Adaid tidal inlet. If you prefer water sports, try kayaking through the mangroves at Al Thakira, where you can spot flamingos and herons. West of Doha, the Zekreet desert features strange rock formations, including the Richard Serra art installation East-West/West-East, which feels like a set from a sci-fi movie. Finally, make time for Al Zubara, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These ruins are the remains of a former pearl-fishing hub, anchored by a fort dating back to the early 20th century.

When to go

Expect high heat year-round due to the desert climate. Temperatures can climb above 45°C (113°F) and sandstorms are common. To avoid the most intense heat, plan your visit between December and April.

Getting there

Qatar is a major transit hub for international travelers. Qatar Airways is the primary carrier, and flying direct from major hubs is standard. If your layover is longer than 5 hours, the airline sometimes offers a complimentary tour of the capital to transit passengers.

Impressive but not captivating

The vertical architecture is very impressive, but I didn't feel like there was much to do or see. There are a few excursions for tourists, like in the desert for example, but walking around the street…
