Ivory Coast at a Glance

Located in West Africa, Ivory Coast offers a distinct blend of lush landscapes, deep-rooted cultural traditions, and a famously hospitable local population.

Abidjan, a high-energy metropolis

Often called the Manhattan of the tropics or the Paris of West Africa, Abidjan is the country's economic powerhouse. This cosmopolitan city thrives on constant movement and cultural variety. Must-see spots include the striking Saint-Paul Cathedral, the Banco National Park, and the high-rise office towers of the Plateau district. The residential neighborhood of Cocody feels like a local take on Beverly Hills, featuring sprawling luxury estates and colonial-era architecture. While Abidjan is heavily industrialized, it still offers access to several white sand beaches. Use standard urban caution here, especially regarding personal safety after dark, as the city has a reputation for elevated crime rates.

Monuments, history, and coastline

The lakes region in the central-west part of the country is a primary destination. Yamoussoukro, the political capital, is home to significant government buildings, most notably the colossal Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. While exploring the area, take a detour to the village of Akresi to watch local fishermen practice traditional techniques. You can find similar scenes in Sassandra, located on the southern coast. This former colonial town is a popular stop for travelers looking to relax on pristine sandy beaches. The nearby Fanti village is a worthwhile stop to meet residents and pick up local handicrafts.

Wild and remote national parks

Head west to the region of the 18 mountains, known for its dramatic topography. Taï National Park protects one of the last remaining primary rainforests in West Africa. It is a rare opportunity to see wildlife, including a large population of chimpanzees, deep in the jungle. The 18 mountains region offers a mix of savannas, waterfalls, liana bridges, and trees exceeding 165 feet in height. You can also travel to the Sud-Comoé region to spot crocodiles near the water and lions in the brush. Comoé National Park is home to a high density of biodiversity, including elephants, leopards, hippos, and antelopes. As a side note, the park is home to 21 different species of wild pigs. Before planning a trip here, verify current travel advisories, as the Sud-Comoé region is frequently flagged due to political instability.

When to go

Ivory Coast is a year-round destination, but most travelers prefer the window between November-December and March-April. During these months, the dry season brings more manageable temperatures and significantly less rainfall.

How to get there

Major airlines offer frequent service to Abidjan. A round-trip flight typically costs between 300 and 500 EUR (about $325 to $540), with a nonstop flight time of approximately 6.5 hours from major European hubs.
