Between majestic cliffs and giant sequoias

Yosemite National Park, located in eastern California, stands as one of the most recognized landscapes in the United States. It delivers raw natural terrain, dramatic vistas, and a diverse range of wildlife.

Protected wilderness

Yosemite National Park was established in 1890, making it one of the three oldest national parks in the country. It spans an area of nearly 1,189 square miles (3,080 square kilometers) and is known for its imposing rock formations, powerful waterfalls, and giant sequoias.

The Yosemite region holds a deep history, with human artifacts discovered that date back nearly 6,000 years. During the 19th century, explorers and naturalists documented the area, which led to its protection and designation as a national park.

The park is filled with notable sites. Yosemite Valley, with its panoramic views of iconic formations like El Capitan and Half Dome, is a primary destination. The waterfalls, such as Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Fall, also provide impressive sightlines.

The park is also famous for its groves of giant sequoias, particularly the well-known Mariposa Grove, where visitors can walk among these massive trees and view the Grizzly Giant, which has stood for over 2,000 years.

A walk among the giants

Activities in the park include hiking, rock climbing, camping, biking, and rafting, giving visitors various ways to access the surrounding environment. Photographers will find plenty of opportunities within the expansive landscapes and local wildlife populations.

The park also offers educational programs, guided tours, and exhibits to provide more information on the history and preservation of this unique ecosystem.

Unforgettable waterfalls

Along with Bryce Canyon, this is my favorite park in the American West! But it is not the easiest to access. Really try to get in before 9 am, because the parking lots are a maze and fill up quickly, not to mention the line at the entrance. Two to three days are necessary to really enjoy the park.

I started the visit with the Lower and Upper Yosemite Falls trails. The Upper requires good physical fitness with its zigzag climbs. Watch out for snakes, I crossed paths with several on the side of the trail, in the rocks. After admiring the very impressive El Capitan, I found some nice souvenirs at the village shop.

The next day, I headed toward Mariposa Grove, in the southwest of the park, to discover the famous giant sequoias. Due to a lack of time, I opted for the Grizzly Giant Loop. It is an easy one hour hike. Even though you can see the oldest sequoia in the park as well as the California Tunnel Tree, which offer good photo spots, I was a bit disappointed. Lots of dead trees and very marked trails. To really feel like you are in the forest, it is better to opt for the long giant tree hike (plan for 4 to 5 hours), but unfortunately I did not have the time.

Limited in winter

I went to Yosemite National Park in March. Since it was still snowing a lot, most of the hikes weren't accessible. We were only able to do the easy walk in the valley as well as the giant sequoias trail (in the snow, that is). All that was left to do was have a nice hot tub in our lodging.
I recommend that you visit this park when the weather is nice because I have only heard very positive things about it.

Beautiful scenery but disappointing wildlife

It is true that the landscapes are sometimes spectacular.
On the other hand, in terms of wildlife, I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping to see bears, large herbivores, big birds of prey... and nothing like that... maybe the human crowds are pushing them to hide?

2 days of stunning hikes

We spent 2 days there hiking. No major acrobatic challenges, but it is still a workout since there is quite a bit of elevation gain. Anyway, just go at your own pace and take the time to open your eyes. Spectacular mountain views, waterfalls, and big forests. If you love nature, go for it, it will be a nice change from the hundreds of miles of urban sprawl in LA.

A stunning and wild park

After leaving San Francisco by car, you drive up to the park. There, they will ask you for $35 per vehicle.
We visited the park in the summer, when the traffic inside the park is totally crazy, so we decided to park our rental car and take one of the shuttles provided.

We had our itinerary planned, so we did a long hike on the Panorama Trail and then went to Glacier Point at the end of the day.

This route offered us incredible scenery and photos that would make any postcard green with envy. We even had the luck of spotting a bear that was feeding a few hundred meters away.

It was truly a beautiful moment, we will surely go back, we still have a lot of things to see.
