Visiting Tignes Ski Resort

Tignes is a town with just over 2,000 residents, perched at an altitude of 1,810 meters in the Vanoise Massif of the Savoie region in France. While the original village is long gone, the ski area remains globally recognized.

History

Records show the parish of Tignes dates back to at least the 11th century. During that era, it was held by the Briançon family before eventually falling under the control of the House of Savoy.

Tignes and Val d'Isère have always been intertwined, as the village was originally part of the Val d'Isère seigniory.

The first ski schools opened here in 1934, followed by the initial ski lifts in 1936 and the local tourism office in 1937.

The construction of the hydroelectric dam was a more turbulent affair. Before its inauguration in 1953, local tensions were so high that the site required constant security from CRS police units.

The resort truly made its mark on the international stage by hosting three freestyle skiing events during the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Tignes Ski Resort

The Espace Killy is the name of the combined ski area shared by Tignes and Val d'Isère. This destination is a prime spot for snow sports enthusiasts, featuring nearly 300km of runs, 2 snowparks, 2 glaciers, and 89 ski lifts. The terrain is highly varied, ranging from 1,550 meters to 3,456 meters in altitude.

Tignes offers much more than just downhill skiing. In winter, you can also head out for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, mountain biking, or dog sledding. Adventurous types can try mountaineering, ice climbing, paragliding, or even ice diving.

During the summer, the nautical base, hiking trails, and paragliding are the main draws for mountain lovers.

After a long day, you have plenty of options to unwind, with 41 restaurants, 19 bars, and 2 nightclubs available to round out the evening.

Tignes remains popular because there is something for everyone, regardless of the season.

For off-piste skiing

Very famous resort, but it will be especially good for skiers who love off-piste. The area is really top-notch for that. For everyone else, it will just be a big resort among many others.

Between the Espace Killy ski area, the frozen lake, La Folie Douce on the slopes, the free concerts, and all the unique bars and nightlife, Tignes is the resort of all resorts. A great time for anyone who loves to party and hit the slopes.

I recommend it, I back it, I approve! There is even an award-winning chocolatier...
