Citadelle Saladin

Visiting the Saladin Citadel, a medieval fortress

Perched on the Moqattam Hill, the Saladin Citadel looms over Cairo and provides a clear look at Egyptian medieval history. Built in the 12th century by Sultan Saladin to fortify the city against the Crusaders, the site gathers impressive historical monuments, museums, and panoramic viewpoints, making a visit a direct encounter with Egyptian heritage.

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali, an Ottoman masterpiece

Among the landmark buildings within the citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali is the most prominent. Often called the Alabaster Mosque due to its interior cladding, it is a prime example of Ottoman architecture that mirrors the mosques of Istanbul. Its massive dome, soaring minarets, and expansive courtyard create an imposing place of worship. Once inside, you will notice the intricate details, from the glowing chandeliers to the refined wall decorations.

The Military Museum and other sites

The Saladin Citadel also houses the Egyptian Military Museum, which tracks the military history of Egypt from the time of the Pharaohs to the modern era. Inside, visitors can examine collections of weapons, uniforms, and military vehicles. This museum is a solid choice for those interested in military strategy and the major battles that shaped Egyptian history.

A panoramic view of Cairo

Finally, the Saladin Citadel offers an exceptional vantage point over Cairo. On a clear day, you can see the Pyramids of Giza on the horizon, a sight that connects the past to the present. This panorama is a highlight of the visit, allowing you to observe the scale of this sprawling metropolis and take in an enduring image of the city.

Must-see

A fortress that stands on the heights of the city, which has preserved part of its ramparts, an old Royal Palace, and which houses the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. I really like it, because we sometimes tend to reduce Egypt to the era of the Pharaohs, but this fortress reminds us that the country continued to exist afterwards! To top it all off, you will have a panoramic view of Cairo from there.
