What to know about Cabourg Beach: fine sand, wide horizons, and a romantic legacy

Some beaches are just a thin strip of sand. Then there is Cabourg Beach. Here, on the Côte Fleurie (Flowered Coast), the sand is more than a spot for a swim. It is a piece of history, a canvas of shifting colors, and a backdrop for timeless elegance. Often called the Beach of Romantics, it stretches for four kilometers of fine sand, offering a sense of quiet escape.

Why is this beach so special?

The appeal of Cabourg starts with its setting. On one side, the vast English Channel stretches as far as the eye can see. On the other, a grand waterfront lined with Belle Époque villas seems to whisper secrets of early seaside vacations. Time here has not stopped, but it has certainly slowed down to match the local pace of life.

The centerpiece of this experience is the famous promenade Marcel Proust. As one of the longest pedestrian boardwalks in Europe, it offers nearly four kilometers of uninterrupted walking space away from any car traffic. It is the heart of Cabourg, where locals and visitors alike stroll, watch the sunset, or simply sit on a bench to observe the changing tides.

A beach with many faces: what to do in Cabourg?

Cabourg Beach is far from one dimensional. Its size and high quality sand make it a versatile space, whether you are looking for relaxation, adrenaline, or a family outing.

A destination known for wellness

While the beach itself built the town's reputation, Cabourg would not be the same without its wellness culture. The salt air, exceptionally clean and crisp, has been considered a natural remedy since the 19th century. It is no surprise that the town became a key destination for fitness retreats and thalassotherapy, which serves as a natural complement to the benefits of the sea.

To organize your wellness trip, you can use specialized sites like Thalasseo to book your spa hotel in Normandy while taking advantage of the best available rates.

A paradise for families and castle builders

With its gentle slope and seasonal lifeguard zones, the beach is a haven for parents. Children have plenty of space to run, build sand fortresses, or fly kites. During the summer, beach clubs offer organized activities, trampolines, and pools, becoming a home base for kids while adults enjoy some well-earned rest.

A playground for athletes

When the tide goes out, it reveals a wide expanse of firm, wet sand that is perfect for sand yachting. The Channel winds make for exhilarating races along the shoreline. Water sports enthusiasts have plenty of options as well, with paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and longe-cote (aquatic walking) being common activities. One of the most memorable experiences is horseback riding on the beach, a classic scene that is very real in Cabourg, especially at dawn or dusk.

Insider tip: For an unforgettable photo, position yourself near the wooden groynes that dot the beach at low tide, just before sunset. The wet sand turns into a perfect mirror, reflecting the vibrant colors of the Normandy sky.

Relaxing thalasso getaway

Relaxing and pleasant setting for thalassotherapy trips. A big sandy beach where you can hang out without being on top of each other. The walk along the beach is romantic. As for the town, there are restaurants and shops, but nothing over the top.

A nice walk by the sea

I would not necessarily recommend Cabourg Beach for sunbathing or swimming. At high tide, the already limited space gets totally crowded in the summer. And despite the presence of the Casino and the grand hotel, which are pretty impressive, the place feels like a concrete jungle. Focus on visiting the town center and walking along the promenade Marcel Proust instead. As for the beach, I much prefer the one in Houlgate, not too far away, with its picturesque setting and long stretch of sand.

Sand and concrete

A beach like many others along the English Channel: sand, concrete, apartment buildings, not much of interest for me.
To avoid being completely negative, the town of Cabourg has its own little charm.
