Visiting Elia Beach

The pristine beaches of Mykonos have played a major role in making the island one of the most sought-after destinations in Greece. Yet, there is more to it than just the shoreline. As a hub for parties and festivals, the island is known for its open spirit and a cosmopolitan atmosphere rooted in personal freedom. Located about six miles southeast of the main town, Elia Beach prioritizes quiet and relaxation, serving as a welcome sanctuary in a destination often known for its high energy. It acts as a perfect summary of the elements that make Mykonos a unique vacation spot.

A quiet escape and a gay-friendly cove

Standing out is no easy task when dreamlike stretches of sand follow one another. Yet, Elia Beach is frequently cited as one of the finest on the island. In this bay with character, fine blonde sand stretches as far as the eye can see, creating a sharp contrast with the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. The beach is bordered by cliffs and rugged hills, whose arid terrain adds a distinct charm to the landscape. With fewer winds thanks to this natural barrier, warmer water, and a peaceful atmosphere, families gravitate toward this site. Far from the bustling spots where the party can sometimes overwhelm the serenity, this beach is a place for relaxation, while still offering full amenities, including drinks and dining. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for rent, typically ranging from 20 to 50 EUR (about $22 to $55) per set. On-site, a water sports center offers introductory lessons in water skiing and jet-skiing, along with boat excursions. Elia Beach is divided into two distinct sections. To the right, a rainbow flag indicates an area popular with gay travelers. Within this smaller cove, a nudist space rounds out the offerings of this multifaceted beach.

Tourist trap

This beach could have had so much charm, but it is just so crowded and so packed with lounge chairs and other tourist traps that you do not feel in touch with nature at all. A real shame.
